Overview
The "D.C. Streetcar" brings streetcar operations back to Washington, D.C. after a long absence. At present, operations consist of one short line, 2.2 miles (3.5 km) of surface running along H Street and Benning Road, Northeast. There are a total of eight stations along the route.
Construction began in 2009 but various issues arose. Operations finally began on February 27, 2016. As of 2020, the system is not operated by the Washington, D.C. transit agency WMATA, but rather a private entity, RATP Dev, a subsidiary of the RATP agency that operates the metro and tram lines in Paris, France.
The D.C. Streetcar fleet consists of six cars, numbered 101-103 and 201-203. The 100 series are Inkeon model "12 Trio", built in the Czech Republic in 2007. They were delivered to Washington in 2009. The 200 series were built in the United States by Oregon firm United Streetcar, based on the Skoda/Inkeon 10T design. These were delivered in 2014. The outfitting of the two types is slightly different but they are both double-articulated, 66 ft. long cars with three doors on each side, one on the front right hand side, and two in the center section.
