MARC Maryland Area Rail Commuter
MARC Maryland Area Rail Commuter
While the MARC train also serves Baltimore and its northern suburbs, all of the MARC lines operate out of Washington, D.C. Union Station. Thus it could be considered mostly a Washington commuter feeder railroad. There are three lines:
- Penn Line: D.C. Union Station to Baltimore Penn Station (with weekday trains continuing to Perryville, MD.). The Penn Line is the only line with weekend service, at approximately two-hour intervals. Service is more frequent on weekdays. The Penn Line operates over the tracks of Amtrak's Northeast Corridor. Main stops along the Penn Line are New Carrollton, Bowie, Odenton, BWI Airport, and Baltimore Penn Station. There are four less frequently served stations north of Baltimore Penn Station. The 39 mile stretch between Union Station and Penn Station is the busiest MARC line by far.
- Camden Line: D.C. Union Station to Baltimore Camden Yards. Operates over the CSX main line via College Park, Greenbelt, Laurel, and intermediate stations, to Baltimore Camden Yards.
- Brunswick Line: D.C. Union Station to Frederick, Brunswick, or Martinsburg, WV, via Silver Spring, Rockville, Gaithersburg, Harpers Ferry and intermeddiate stations.
The MARC lines use both diesel-locomotive hauled and electric-locomotive hauled trains, with the Penn Line being the only electrified line. Passenger coaches are both single and multi-level.
