Vienna, Austria New York TARS Streetcars

After WWII, more than half of Vienna's streetcar fleet was destroyed or damaged. The New York City Third Avenue Railway System, having ceased streetcar operation in June, 1947, had streetcars to sell. Vienna purchased 42 1938/1939-built streetcars from TARS. The cars' purchase was financed under the Marshall Plan for rebuilding Europe after the war. The cars arrived in Vienna between May and July of 1949, but operations using the cars did not begin til March 1950. The cars were wider than Vienna's homegrown streetcars, which limited their usefulness to certain trackage, mostly in the more suburban areas of the city. The cars were finally withdrawn on September 5, 1969.
