Overview
The capital city of Switzerland, Bern, has five tram lines that date back to the turn of the century. All of the lines traverse the old city from the Bahnhofplatz east along Spitalgasse and Marktgasse to the clock tower at Zytglogge. Here the lines diverge with one service heading north across the Kornhausbrucke and the others heading south via Helvetiaplatz to various branch terminals in the southeast of the city. West from Bahnhofplatz, the tram lines to Wabern, Weissenbühl, and Fischermattli are older, and the lines to Brünnen Westside and Bümpliz are trolleybus conversions which opened as tram lines in 2010. In addition to the tram lines, there are several trolleybus routes, one of which, the number 12, runs alongside the tram lines from Bahnhofplatz to Zytglogge and further east through the old town across the Nydeggbrucke. An old tram depot is now a well regarded restaurant and brewery alongside the Bear Park at the east end of the Nydeggbrucke. A Tram Museum is located at Weissenbühl which is open on certain summer weekends and operates tram museum service on an occasional basis.
