despite what mta has said there is a rumor on staten island that 50 mci buses will go to brooklyn when this new shipment arrives be they new or used. we still have 1744,1749, 1770, 1771,and 1853 being used daily on express routes while transit scraps 3700 series 1984 local buses.
#1713 i was on today,it is a local bus at yukon, guess they havent scrapped it yet.
I was at YUK a few weeks ago and I saw 1706 running there. Once all of the Orions have arrived, then you'll see the RTS getting stored/scrapped.

With the X27 going back to Jackie Gleason, what routes will be added at Ulmer Park & what routes will be lost at Jackie GLeason with the X27 going back there with the next scheduled pick.
Thanks,
Mike
None, and none. Ulmer Park lost the X27 because it was out of space. The neighbors are upset about buses being parked all over the streets surrounding the depot. Gleason, on the other hand, has a cemetery on one side and 36th Street Yard (where some space is being made to store buses) on another.

[With the X27 going back to Jackie Gleason, what routes will be added at Ulmer Park & what routes will be lost at Jackie GLeason with the X27 going back there with the next scheduled pick.]
well on staten island mta parks its 275,000 mci buses by pathmark all night and on weekends and doesnt care what staten islanders think.
It's not that bad. They are parked Along Independence Avenue and Yukon Avenue, both heavily travelled streets already. There were complaints regarding the use of Forest Hill Road as they slow down traffic on that newly opened cut-through section.
ulmer park is getting more service with the routes they have. personally, i would love them to get back the B68
I might have missed a post but...when did the B68 leave UP, and where did it go?
The B68 went to Jackie Gleason Depot in September 1998.
David
[I might have missed a post but...when did the B68 leave UP, and where did it go?]
the B68 left 1 year ago and i wished ulmer park gets in back
That's not going to happen, at least in the foreseeable future. With the departure of the X27 next month, Ulmer Park's fleet will be virtually the same size as it was in the Spring of 1997, before the fare structure changed under MetroCard. The X27 is being moved because Ulmer Park's fleet was too large for the facility.
David
[the B68 left 1 year ago and i wished ulmer park gets in back]
but i was told that Ulmer Park would be all express routes for brooklyn. isnt a bit silly to have JG have the X27 while Ulmer has the X25,X28 and X29?
Who told you that Ulmer Park would have all express routes? Was it somebody who would absolutely, positively know such things or be in a position to make them happen? Things change!
Once more, with feeling: Ulmer Park is physically out of space. To alleviate the problem, one or more routes has to leave the depot so the number of buses used to provide service on that route/those routes (plus spares) can leave as well. The route chosen by the Department of Buses was the X27. Jackie Gleason Depot has housed the X27 before, and the X25 (which technically doesn't exist, being served by runs on the X27, X28, and X29) will be operated jointly by Ulmer Park and Jackie Gleason, as was the case before September 1996, when the X27 was moved to Ulmer Park.
Whatever savings there may be in operating all three express routes out of one depot are minor. Maintaining peace in the area surrounding Ulmer Park was deemed more important.
David
[but i was told that Ulmer Park would be all express routes for brooklyn. isnt a bit silly to have JG have the X27 while Ulmer has the X25,X28 and X29?]
THE LAST I HEARD THE X27 IS BEING MOVED IS DUE TO A CONSTRUCTION PROJECT ON THE FUEL TANKS SIMILAR TO WHAT HAPPENED AT FLATBUSH.
B68 went to JG last fall when JG gave the B4 back to Ulmer Park.
Actually, those two events happened a year apart. The B4 went back to Ulmer Park in September 1997 and the B68 went to Jackie Gleason in September 1998.

What, me? Ride a bus?
AS A YOUNGSTER IN THE MID 1960'S THERE WERE 2 SUNDAYS A YEAR THAT THE ENY DEPOT WAS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC FOR TOURS.
THEY WERE ADVERTISED IN THE SUBWAYS AND ON BUSES. MY MOM AND I WENT FROM SUNNYSIDE ON THE B24\29 TO BROADWAY AND THEN TOOK THE -J- TO THE DEPOT. IS THAT DONE ANYMORE? IF NOT, WHY NOT? BUDGETARY? OR SECURITY?
The last ENY open house that I can remember was in 1980. They used one of the (then new) Grumman 870's to drive the visitors around the and through the depot. We also walked through some of the depot. I remember going through the paint shop and seeing a 1975 Flxible being preped for a paint job.
i remember it well as it was my first ride on the ill fated grummans.nyct still has these open houses. check the transit museum website to see whats happening. there was one at eny last year.
When TA got the Grummans, they "premiered" them at ENY. Perhaps if enough people suggest it, TA will have an open house at JG when the New Flyers arrive. You guys already missed the boat with Orions, MCIs and Artics.
Too late; the low-floor New Flyers started running a week or two ago.
David

In those days ENY almost always would get the first buses of an order. Example: In the 70's they had 7500, 9000 and in the 80's they had 201 and 1201. I really don't think that was a coincidence. They would continue to other NYCTA depots and then MABSTOA depots would get their share.

Does anybody have a Queens Bus Map from 1975?
A reminder that when destination signs are added or updated, not all buses receive the new codes and/or signs. For example, at Hudson, some M14 buses read "10 Av" and others read "Chelsea Piers." This is entered with the same code number. I would feel sympathy for confused passengers but most people on the 14s just get on the bus without checking its destination.
I'm not 100% sure on this but many years ago, I believe MaBstoa buses were lettered and numbered in goldtone and TA buses were lettered and numbered in white. Also, MaBSTOA buses had "Manhattan and Bronx Surface Transit Operating Authority" labeled on each side of the bus over the windows. TA buses did not have similar treatment.
The early TA new looks had "New York City Transit Authority" lettered over the windows in the same place the early Mabstoa new looks had the lettering Alan mentioned. I think that lettering lasted as long as the green paint scheme, but stopped with the two-tone blue paint scheme.
Actually most lettering stopped when the MTA logos were introduced around 1968. The buses were repainted still with green but eliminating the roof lettering. Smaller black lettering was then added lower down on the sides towards the front.
When the TA/OA started painting buses two tone blue many MABSTOA buses did have the gold numbers on them. They did not do this very long. In the late 70's most of the buses had the silver numbers on them and when you did see a bus with gold numbers on it - you knew it had been a few years since it had been painted. One way of knowing this is that the paint was dull and also buses that were painted had the date (month & year) on the interior just above the drivers' window. Since gold numbers were used with the green paint scheme - I was thinking that those gold numbers used on blue buses were simply left overs.
Spotted 6246, 6250, and 6251 on the s61 this morning while on the x31 on my way to work (MCI 1909, for the curious). Finally, the new Orions are arriving at my 'home' depot.
-Hank
buses 6250-6266 have arrived. 10 are in service today. bus 6259 being driven by a maint supt in depot went two feet stalled out and would not start again. enough said about orions.
Hey, it got there all the way from Oriskany problem-free.
This happens occasionally, you know it just as well as I do.
-Hank
Newsflash There are over 100 of them at castleton depot
I know this, I was noting their recent arrival at Yukon, where they are just starting to trickle in.
-Hank
just saw #6251 and #6271 from Yukon depot running today. guess they showed up,supposed to get 94 of them, castleton is getting 114.
that has been changed to 108 for castleton and 100 for yukon. if anyone cares buses 2686 2688 3772 3774 1703 and 1723 are awaiting scrap. pictures can be taken from outside depot.
I found the following information on Ulmer Park routes in summer of 1974-25 years ago.Old B-1 had 9 runs(Summer 13 runs),old B-4 had 12 runs,old B-5 had 36 runs,B-6 had 55 runs,B-8 had 47 runs,B-9 had 31 runs,old B-21 had 17 runs,old B-34 had 31 runs,B-36 had 36 runs,B-64 had 19 runs,B-68 had 42 runs(summer-48 runs) and B-74 had 8 runs. The 28X and 29X had no runs then bit only had extras. How does this compare today
It's much different now. Off the top of my head, for the Fall, B1 will have 43 runs, B4 26 runs, B82 (B5 replacement) 20 runs and an extra in Ulmer Park/rest is in East New York, B6 73 runs School Open/66 runs School Closed (with 2 School Open runs and some interlined pieces in Flatbush), B9 is in Gleason, B36 28 runs School Open/23 runs School Closed, B8 is in East New York, B64 13 runs, B68 is in Gleason, B74 8 runs, X28 35 runs, and X29 10 runs. B34 no longer exists. If you really need to know actual numbers, I can find out.

b34 and b21 ceased to exist on nov 12,1978. a modified b1 operates those routes.
This years system pick the X27 is going back to JG, and it is going to have 39 run with some other line interlased with it. UP is going to get more run on the other line but not enough to make up the different.
Is Ulmer park getting the B-9 or B-68 back from Gleason. Also any other system pick changes being made
Ulmer Park not getting anthing in the system pick. Were only have a promise from the bosses that we will get more work in later picks not the system pick. I will proble go to Gleason in this system pick becouse if we lost the 31 runs from the X27 and get nothing back I would most likey would lose the weekends off I have now. I would have a better chane of weekend at Gleasson.
You should go to Fresh Pond and pick the Q58 or B24. You may get to drive my baby 4212!
Fresh Pond is about a two hour train ride from were I live. I live right across the street from Ulmer Park. Anyway I would like to drive a New Flyer and an Orian. So JG is the best depot for me to goto.
rumores that i heard is that Ulmer Park would get the B-2 and B-31 route and would lose the X27 line. Is this true?
They are supposed to get the 2 and 31 when FLT goes all articulated
That if FB goes all articulated. It is not 100% for shore about this.
You may have a point there. Im sure the artics will be used on the B41,B44, and my former route, B46. The B49 might not see the artics at all.............
B46M Limited
not true. B-21 was removed from serice in 1982,when Ulmer park got the B-3. In 1982,this is what the depot had:
B-1(combined from B-21 and B-34)
B-3(From Flatbush)
B-4(extended to Sheepsead Bay)
B-5
B-6
B-8
B36
B-64
B-68
B-74
X-28
X-29
B36SS(Sea Gate Loop)
What's the difference between the B-36SS and the B-36. Where did the B-21 and the B-34 run?
b36 surf av route almost same now=--=b36s seagate shuttle--b21 brighton beach av from mackenzie st.-oriental blv to knapp st -emmons av--b34 bay ridge -13 avs-86 st from bay ridge av-shore rd toharway-25 avs
also..
B-3, 86th Street-25th Avenue to E71st-Ave U or E74th St-Avenue X
B-4, 25th Avenue-Harway Avenue to 77th Street-Narrows Avenue
the b36 ran from Nostrand Avenue-Avenue U to Surf Avenue-West 37th Street. The B36SS ran inside Sea Gate. The B-34 ran from 25th Avenue-Harway Avenue to Bay Ridge Avenue-Shore Road, while the B-21 ran from oriental Boulevard-Mackenzie Street to Voorhies Avenue-Knapp Street.
What ran on the modern B1 route between them? What were the terminals?
B4-ran from 25th Avenue-Harway Avenue to 77th Street-Narrows Avenue.
B1-ran from 25th Avenue-86th Street to Oriental Boulevard-mackenzie street.
b34-ran from 25th Avenue-Harway Avenue to Bay Ridge Avenue-Shore Road.
I also forgot to ask, when did the B36SS stop running?
mid 1980's i think. there was also the B74SS, but that stopped runnig due to low ridership
the b36s stopped running in 1989.the b74 still operates from stillwell terminal to w37 and loops back around. there is only one terminal.hope that helps. i drive at ulmer park since 1988

This morning I spotted GL 1184 arriving at AD on a flatbed. As a bonus, I also saw MTA 1064 arriving under her own power. As I watched her try to make a tight U-turn to reach AD, I wondered why the MTA would buy an articulated bus in the first place. The articulated made the turn, but not without backing up traffic for a few minutes. Very handsome looking though.
Why wouldn't the MTA buy Articulated buses, I think the whole thing is long over due, the MTA-NY Bus should've looked into artics years ago!!!
Trevor Logan
I have nothing against articulated buses. I like the ones built by Prevost and operated by Hampton Jitney as well as NYCT articulateds. My gripe is that these buses are more of a handful in a turn than a conventional bus; in my view. The U-turn to get to AD is tight for a conventional bus, 1064 had a tough time making the turn. But then again, most buses, rigid or articulated, have some degree of difficulty making U-turns.
Since NYCT's articulateds consist of a 35-foot front section and a 25-foot rear section (as opposed to a standard bus's 40-foot single section), it's my understanding that an artic is EASIER to turn than a standard bus. Maybe someone who drives them for a living can settle this.
David

From what I've been told by drivers here, the articulateds that have a rigid rear axle have a wider turning radius than the ones with steerable rear wheels such as the M-A-N's had.
I know that they could run the M-A-N articulateds on routes in Pittsburgh that could barely handle a normal 35 foot coach due to tight turns. The newer artics we have tend to get hung up more in tight turns (newer ones have a rigid rear axle).
RDChilds
Yes, they do drive more easily than your standard 40-foot non-bendable bus. You just drive the forward 35-foot section and the trailer follows.
Ours are NFI D60LF's....low floor versions of what NYCTA has.
The New Flyer are not D60LF's they are stander High floors D60.
He did say that they have the low floor verison of what we have which is correct. MTA has the D60 and according to New Flyer the D60 has a turning radius of 41 feet which is remarkable for a 60 foot bus. My brother in law drives the D60's out of Gun Hill and he loves them and tells me all the time that they turn better than the RTS's.
Peace
DaShawn
Actually they did look into articulateds back in 1991 when they tested the Neoplan on the M15, nice bus but it was not a sound unit due to the rusting problems and other things that other agency's had reported. Then we finally got the New Flyer Galaxy D60's and yes they were long over due!
Peace
DaShawn
Weren't artics also being tested on S.I. expresses back around 1984?
They did indeed use artics, marked 'Big Apple Bus' on some SI routes during the Grumman fiasco. This in addition to WMATA and leased Greyhoud buses.
-Hank
Chris are you sure it was Green Bus 1184? The reason that I ask is because Green Lines doesn't operate this bus anymore. Triboro does. See 1183-1184 were originally at GL. Now they're CTC, same numbers.
1185-1189 are transferred and renumbered at Jamaica as 3850-3854. The vertical lights still exist on 3850-3854 but not on 1183-1184.
You probably meant bus 1164 at AD.
MCIMAN2000
You're right, MCIMAN. After thinking about it, it was 1164. Where did I get 1184 from? Sorry for the mistake; I spotted the bus from across the street.
I saw 1164 yesterday sitting next to a 212-RECRUIT Police bus at Woodhaven and Queens Blvd (Q11). BTW: What former MTA bus was the police recruit bus?
MCIMAN2000
I was in Flushing this afternoon with DaShawn and we saw bus 552 on Q17, run 028. Guess it either on a cover run or a Jamaica RTS broke down and somebody from Stengel volunteered to do an extra piece on Q17.

I spotted MCI #1861 in the bronx today ????????????
Trevor
I really don't want to play teacher, but that would be 'Weird, Weird Sight'
I thought your were talking about a web page.
And spotting the MCI in the Bronx is odd. Where did you see it? Any ideas on what it was doing there?
-Hank
Maybe it was going to Gunhill Depot?
As a matter of fact it was coming from that area on the Bruckner Expressway!!!!
Trevor
Sorry about the mis-spelling before, I was rushing!!!!!!
Lengthening bus route has always resulted in worse service as you can witness in Brooklyn by the B82.
On the other hand, chopping the M10 route may not help either with new terminals like Penn Station and Lincoln Center. My choices? Instead of Penn Station, Abingdon Square, eliminating the M14 to Abingdon Square and terminating the M11 at 14 St. Instead of Lincoln Center, Columbus Circle, by Central Park.
Assuming Lincoln Center is the northern terminus of the southern portion of the newly split route (I'm six states away and I can't find any information regarding the split on the MTA web page), that makes sense -- Lincoln Center is a very popular destination, especially in the evening, for riders from Long Island (i.e., Penn Station). This way they can take either section of the M10 to get there. Columbus Circle, while an important transportation hub, is not much of a destination itself (although it would make it easier to turn the bus around).
I see on a lot of old privite company RTS, the hood look like there are going to fall off. The top is hanging back exposing the upper part of the engine. This is on a lot of Queens Surface RTS. Havent seen something like this on NYCTA RTS. Even on some of the newer privite RTS, this happens. What causes this?
On a Q76 a month ago I had another strange experience. Everytime the driver open the door a musical tune played. Liked it very much. It was
a short muscial tune. How did he do this? Hook a tape recorder to the door? I don't think so. The tune played with the driver "Look, no hands" comming out of this mouth. Short wiring?
Those hoods rattle loose all the time, as do many other parts. I've spotted several TA buses, and some Orions as well, with loose engine covers. My guess is, the TA is just slightly more diligent in getting them fixed, which is why you see less of them.
-Hank
The Orion hoods are better than the RTs because they have a strong spring that keeps the cover closed tight, while the RTS is more of a lock type of system which after getting opened and closed daily wears out. The hoods must be opened daily to check for oil levels and tranny fluids when they are fueled daily/
After this has happened to me twice, I thought it was unique, but in seeing what happened this morning, I find that it's a problem.
The right-side mirrors on the MCIs are being knocked loose in the bus wash, at least at Yukon. They are not being re-attached properly, which has led to two buses I was riding pulling over for the driver to fix the mirror, and this morning, 1867 pulled from service at Richmond Ave and Arthur Kill road with a defective mirror. The dispatcher on the scene (it's the terminal for x1,4,5,6,7,8,15 and 31, and a stop on the x17) attempted to tighten the bolts holding the mirror to the support arm, and then swapped the bus with another that was waiting to be used on another route.
To top that, all the passengers except one got off the bus. One genius left behind got off the bus after the replacement had left, and started cursing that no one told him to get off, when the dispatcher made the announcement to the passengers loud enough to be heard across the street from the bus.
-Hank
nyct is experimenting with a remote mirror arm to solve this problem. as i drove the x1 on the gowanus i saw the mirror arm had moved giving me no right side view. had to stop at tunnel to fix. this is a very serious problem.
MCI mirrors have had the loosening problem way back to MC-7's!!!
I don't think they were meant to be driven through a mechanical bus washer with rotating bristle arms very often. When I used to drive charter buses, almost every one of them was loose -- on all the buses we got from Greyhound, which saw regular trips through such bus washers. On the buses that were bought new, and only saw hand washing by illegal aliens, using a hand brush and a hose, never saw a single loose mirror.
You'd think as well as MCI builds the rest of the bus, they'd build a mirror and mount it strongly enough to deal with the mechanicsl bus wash machines....
lets not give transit any ideas. the illegal alien market on staten island is quite large.
Has the MTA published and distributed the new 1999 Insiders Bus Guide?
Thanks
No, I just called and its at the printer. "In a couple of weeks"
I've heard reference to an "NJ Transit Bus Rodeo" several times, held in June.
What exactly are they? Are they similar to the NYCTA Bus Fest?
Thanks.
Now all DD engines are electronic control. CAn anyone explain the difference between DDEC 2, 3 and 4? What are the differences?
The site at valleydd.com siads that older DD engines are mechanical control. How do the mechanical controls work? Belts and values?
Is this the same as Cummins engines? If not what are the differences?
Why don't intercity buses use the DD series 92 engines anymore?
Also it saids that the four cylinder series 50 is a short working engine not meant to be used on long hauls. Is this true? Why?
I believe I can answer some of this...DDEC II, III, and IV are the different versions of it, IV being the newest. I believe Cummins has an electronic control system called CELECT (I saw that in a piece of Van Hool literature) on the M11 and I would imagine that it's on their B, C, and IS series engines too. The series 92 isn't used in new buses because of clean air regulations, not exactly sure why but I suspect it's partly beacause of its 2-stroke design (side note: GM's Electro-Motive Division designed a brand new 4-stroke diesel for the SD90MAC locomotive instead of using the 2 stroke design they had that dated back to the late 30's-maybe because of clean air regs too?) The series 50 and series 60 are 4-stroke. As far as the series 50 on long hauls, doesn't Greyhound have MC12's with them?
Peace,
Big D
Yes Greyhound has MC12's with 330HP Series 50 on the later 2900 and 3000 series buses. The difference in the DDEC II, III, and IV are also the power of the ECU's or Electronic Control Units. The DDEC IV are now the smallest and most powerful used. The newer electronic controls also help to reduce emissions and improve fuel economy. The 6V-92TA only came with DDEC III and was sought not to be economically feasable to upgrade them anymore to be environmentally correct, so the engine was discontinued for new bus use, but it is available through DD as a Reliabuilt Reman unit which is used in the TA 7000 series with Catalytic converter for cleaner air.
Peace
DaShawn
I saw 4903 at 175th Street and Union Tpke today. It was to run on Q46 bit was deadheading back to Queens Blvd. The 2 emergency lights near destination sign were flashing. Maybe 4900 will be the hybrid for MHV. As pf now, 4903 is operating out of QV.
MCIMAN2000
No 4900 series RTS-06 will become a Hybrid, the MTA-NYC Bus is buying 5 new RTS-06 Hybrids from NovaBUS, the first bus is due by November-December, so there will be no more converting buses to Hybrids, the ONLY conversion was 8397. Otherwise all Hybrids from here on out will be brand new!!!!
Trevor
The question now is it an alternative fueled bus like once said or is it a straight clean diesel?
Peace
DaShawn
straight clean diesel like the other 4900s
MCIMAN2000
Taped the movie with De Niro the other night. Amazing what Hollywood Magic can do. Most of the exterior shots were actually in Astoria/Woodside and inside Bryant HS. One scene"C" gets on his father's bus for a ride. Its in Mabstoa green and labeled BX 12 to Sedgewick Ave. with white letters on black mylar. Slowing the tape down you see it marked as 3164. Its a new look fishbowl with no a/c. But the giveaway that its not a NYC bus is that the back door is a bifold electric. Yet when the girl he likes on the bus gets up you realize that the interior shots were on a different bus since the back door is a push out type and there is an a/c unit on the back. When he gets off the bus on the return trip, the mylar, white on black, says Bx 12 to City Island
take a better look. the bus is numbered 3134. you are very observant though. the scenes at the end in the girls neighborhood were actually filmed on neck road in brooklyn. nyct was asked to participate but could not guarantee their equipment could start each day so buses were leased from a private firm.
YOU ARE PROBABLY RIGHT RE THE #. I DID THE POST FROM MEMORY THIS AM HAVING VIEWED THE TAPE QUICKLY LAST NIGHT.
WONDER WHO LEASED THEM THE BUS FOR THE EXTERIOR SHOTS AND WHAT BUS WAS USED FOR THE INTERIOR SHOT? THE EXTERIOR PAINT JOB WASN'T TOO GOOD
I have never gotten a chance to ride the B15 to the airport. But it seems that it do not make any stops while on the Conduits. How come the bus does not make any stops on the Conduits, particular in front of the A train station and Cross Bay Blvds? Maybe a limited service along the Conduits............
B14M
Going towards JFK Airport the B-15 travels via the Nassau Expressway. Going towards Brooklyn the B-15 does not make any stops because it will interfere with the Green Bus Line franchise on the Q-11. Also if you stop at Cross Bay Blvd there is really no safe place for a bus stop as it will be hard to cross the street.
How come the MTA discontinued the City Island service on the Bx12?
B14M
The Bx-12 was too long a route and buses were being shorturned to return to 207th Street/Manhattan. It was decicded to split the route into 2 routes. Bx 12 and Bx 29 . Most City Island riders were bound for the Pelham Bay IRT Station.
I saw the siege and there was a unreal bus and then 4199 with PA on it. Someone told me that they made the unreal bus unreal cuz ppl would be scared to ride on it. 4199 belongs to castleton depot and is a real bus. How about that. why didn't they change the numbers on that?
4199 is not a TA bus. It's owend by one of the movie car supply companies, and stored with the TA (there being a lack of space to store buses)
-Hank
Do you mean that 4199 is not a TA bus any longer? Because 4199 was once a Kingsbridge bus.
Peace
DaShawn
I looked at the UTC roster and 4199 is at CAS and running.
UTC roster has it at Kingsbridge. But it's my understanding that the bus is a movie bus, not used in regular service.
-Hank
Regarding 4199, I seem to remember someone mentioning that the "4199" seen in "The Siege" et al, is NOT really 4199 but some other bus that was basically retired. Somehow the number 1648 is in my mind, and funny thing is, I just saw 1648 in some other movie when channel surfing the other night. Maybe I'm just mixed up....
From my understanding, 4199 is known as the Movie and TV bus. It is kept in pristine shape (i.e. no dings, dents, scratchitti). It has been used on the opening to the HBO show 'Sex and the City' and it probably is the one you see on the opening to "Late Show with David Letterman'. The fact that it is kept in such shape means it is probably not in passenger service in the Bronx.
since the first bombing of that bus the number of that wasn't real, and the second bus had a real number. Someone told me that the MTA renumbers buses to fake numbers if used in a movie or TV show because people would be scared to ride on that bus. Why didn't they switch 1648 to like 9875 instead to a number that is in use?
whoops i stand corrected. it is former castleton bus 1648. they also own bus 1576 which probably is its original number. you have to see the wheels they put on this thing and youll know transit no longer owns it.
the bus you saw is pa1654 a flatbush original which was retired from transit service at castleton depot. it was sold to picture cars an outfit that supllies old vehicles for movie sets. they used the number 4199 for that movie. transit bus 4199 is probably still alive and running.
What is the difference between machancial control engines and electronic control engines? Besides computers how do the machancial controls work? Belts and pulleys?
Elcetronic controls replace all the cables and pnuematic equipment that relays the foot [edal motion to the throttle.
The addition of the computers to the engines allows them to be tuned better, resulting in better fuel economy and reduced pollution, as the computer can sense when the engine is being used for high speed or hill climbing, based on interfacing with the electronic transmission. It's insanely more complicated than that, however.

When I was in Phoenix, Arizona, about a month ago, I was surprised to see a wheelchair user boarding one of Valley Metro's many Low Floor 40 foot flyer buses through the rear door. I had assumed that the wheelchair ramp is at the front door. Now that Gleason is starting to get 40 foot low floor Flyers, does anyone know if the wheelchair ramp is at the rear door or the front?
Good question! I remember when F1997 was here on it's test run through Manhattan, this unit was D40LF and it had the ramp placed on both doors so that you could do a wheelchair through the front or throught the back if the unit is one of those bigger motorized type.
Peace
DaShawn
Just rode 820 today. It's at the front. (I looked to see if there was one in the back too, but the floor is solid.
Front is better, because the driver does not have to get up and go to the back. It will save time.
Cool! Now why can't they do that with the RTS?
Peace
DaShawn
You CAN get a front door wheelchair lift on RTS's. But with it comes a VERY UGLY front end on the bus, more squarish than your run-of-the-mill RTS front.
When TMC was making them, they were known as "08" models. Chicago was one of the major purchasers of the "08" model; El Paso also got some, as did Long Beach, California.
Nowadays, under NovaBus, they have some "internal" model designations, though the buses all seem to come with "T80206" as the model on the plate in the bus. The "normal" RTS as NYCTA has been getting now gets designated (at least on the delivery sheets from NovaBus that I have) as a RTNFD82. That translates as "Rapid Tranmsit, Narrow Front Door, 8 5-foot modules, 102-inches wide".
The buses with the front lifts are RTWFD82 (for a 40/102 bus, wide front door). The last two numbers I've seen so far are 6 (30-foot),
7 (35-foot) and 8 (40-foot) then 2 or 6 (102 or 96 wide).
Golden Gate Transit in California got some RTWFD82 suburbans, and their front end is BUTT UGLY. From the rear of the front door to the rear bumper is normal RTS. But that front end has gotta go....
Thanks for the info! I know that the RTS comes in the WFD version, but my point, which I should have made a bit clearer is that the TA should look into the WFD version of the RTS due to the fact that any bus with Front Door Wheelchair lifts just same time and speeds up the trip. If they can order the New Flyer C40LF and D60 Galaxy with Front Door, why not the RTS?
Peace!
DaShawn
Look at the differences in the front ends. The New Flyer D60 has a front door lift for the obvious reason the bus being 60'
The C40LF has the low floor, and was essentially designed from the beginning to be front-door accesible.
-Hank
As well as the RTS when TMC was building them. The TA has not even tested one with a front door and alot of bus operators I have spoken to have also wondered why as well! So go figure.
Peace
DaShawn
On the New Flyer D40LF's, a customer may order their buses with either a front ramp, a rear ramp, or ramps at both doors. We have
all three configurations where I drive in southern California.
1. Transit workers will not agree to go on strike due to Taylor Law penalties.
2. The union is in a state of upheaval. Willie James and company are not only battling the forces of New Directions, they currently lack much membership support, mostly due to promises of pension reform unfulfilled.
3. Slowdowns, if they do happen, will be sparse and scattered, occurring mostly on subways. (The most effective slowdown I've witnessed was when bus operators refused to pull out buses that did not meet some absurdly stringent safety standards, e.g. a slightly loose stanchion.)
4. TA has the best hardline negotiators that money can buy. The Union does not.
5. There are many new TA workers. You don't start a new job and go on strike.
6. TA workers accept the ideas of small salary increases and loss of benefits (although they do grumble about it).
7. Tight economic times. Very few workers can "afford" to go on strike.
8. TA workers will not unify and agree to go on strike.
Well, most workers in subways favor a strike. Maybe if workers from M.A.B.S.T.O.A. would open their eyes and see what the present leadership in Local 100 is all about, then we can be on the same side. Until then, subways has to outvote buses to prevent getting stuck with a lousy contract. BTW, M.A.B.S.T.O.A. didn't reject the $60 media campaign in large numbers. I don't think that's a big no confidence vote in Local 100 leadership.
"M.A.B.S.T.O.A. didn't reject the $60 media campaign in large numbers. I don't think that's a big no confidence vote in Local 100 leadership."
So what Mike is saying is that MaBSTOA rejected the media campaign in small numbers? Making for a small no confidence vote?
By the way, when I say "TA workers," I'm including MaBSTOA. I'm not a separatist. Also, it is a sad reflection of our nation's voting record that less than half of our union votes on elections, proposals, et al.
Well the Divison Of Subways is 50 50. More people at least at Van Courtland, E241 St, nor Pelham will not support a Strike. I also don't support it. The MTA will be the Winners of the Strike. Just like on my visit to Phila SEPTA won in that mouth long strike. The workers got a pay raise but shorter time at the Terminal and increased penalties.
10. Baby needs new shoes.
9. You mean we're not on strike right now?
8. Workers will be forced to spend more time with their families.
7. Willie James would be forced to cancel his "fact finding" trip to The Bahamas.
6. Blockbuster won't have enough tapes of Speed to rent to TA workers during strike.
5. Calling it "Strikefest 99" won't fool anybody.
4. Illiterate workers can't make picket signs.
3. Giuliani will open his can of whuppass.
2. Coffee served to workers at last strike was not 100% Colombian.
and the number one reason the TA will not strike-
1. I'm on vacation that week.
I had a question, will the low-floor #995 bus be tested in the other boroughs, like in the Bronx?
I was checking out all of the bus websites and the pictures, including those of #995, were very interesting. So much so that I had a dream the other night that #995 ran in the Bronx with "City Island" as its destination. I guess that was from watching the film and reading the postings on "A BRONX TALE".
Thanks.
Miss 995 went home to its base in Upstate New York. I dunno if its coming back.
SHE'S COMING BACK!!!!
Trevor
Did she go back again or what? The reason for my question is that Miss 995 was on the M11 just this past Saturday.
Peace
DaShawn
Miss 995 is back, as I rode on it Wednesday around noon on the M11. I do have a few thoughts on her.
She sure is a fine bus, but I do wonder about the 'wave your hand' to open the back door thing. There is a significant pinch point where the door comes into the bus that could hurt someone. This isn't an issue for most of us, but it only takes one dullard to spoil it.
The return of the rear window is something I thought I would never see in my lifetime. Between 995 and 6352 (Low Floor Orion), maybe we can again see where we just came from!
I do like the seating layout of Ms. 995 a lot more so than Sir 6352, despite his having seats that appeal to my express bus spoiled posterior. 36 seats versus 32 seats will always win more fans. The rubber straphangers have to go. They are sure to look grungy quite quickly and don't seem as durable. Also, I saw more than one person bump into it while stainding up out of their seat. Perhaps no straphangers are the answer here.
I definitely am not a fan of the "pull cord" to signal a stop request. In my mind, having had the push strip's located all over the bus was far more convenient for standees. Also, once the cord stretches, they sure look cheesy.
She sure is a smooth fine riding coach though! I can't wait to see more of her, perhaps in an express-bus seating layout even.
Thanks for letting me ramble....
when will that bus be tested on staten island not to mention the bronx and queens?
I did not know that that bus had a rear window..........
B46M Limited
Hi, does anyone know when and where the fall pick will be held?
Gleason probably.
On my way to work on thursday 8-5-99, i saw New Fyler #1025 with Westside Depot sticker on York Avenue and running up and down 86th Street. The bus said "Not In Service". Are they putting articulateds on the M86 route? Please let me know if they are.
1025 has been transferred to West Side for use at that depot. When the rest of the 1999 New Flyers come in to the Bronx the other units that are there already will be brought down to West Side. Still don't know if 126th Street will get new units or transferred units, but looks like West Side will definitely get transferred, 3 year upgraded units from the Bronx. As for the M86 they are still testing them to see what lines the artics are ideal for. So today it will be on the M86, tomorrow it could be on the M79 or M72.
Peace
DaShawn
New Flyer Articulated D60 will be on M102, M96, M86, & M79. That all i heard from my father but he didn't know West Side Depot is going to get new buses or buses from the bronx. Hey DaShawan I don't know where you get the information from? because the New Flyer is not even finish the 3 year upgraded yet. Don't forget New Flyer #1000-1069 is (1997) Model & #1070-1109 is (1998) Model. We have to wait & see later this year.
Peace Out
Meaney
As I understood, the Artics were supposed to go to the M15 first, in Manhattan.
-Hank
TA is deciding whether to use artics on M42 or M86.
Take a look at 1025, it has gone through a 3 year upgrade even though it is only 2 to 2 1/2 years old. 1000 or 1001 i can't remeber which is a 1996 model. For a while 1025 did not even have a depot sticker until recent. The deal is if you have 1025 at West Side 9 times out 10 they will get the transferred units because other wise you guys would have probably gotten 5250 for the first unit. I do agree that we do have to wait and see because you know the TA. My info comes from observation and asking questons of people who work for the TA and MaBSTOA.

Here's one for the books fellow bus buffs. A PA airport shuttle bus had just exited Sunrise Highway at the Waverly Avenue exit and was trying to get over to the curb to pause at the local diner. This driver almost caused a huge traffic pileup because this section of the service road is EXTREMELY busy will all the cars comming off Nicholls Road. He stopped in the MIDDLE of the service road trying to get to the curb. The next time I saw this renegade bus, he was going west on the service road in the other direction. I figured he must be going to AD. He missed his exit big time.
I'm looking for the schedule for the NJ Transit bus from the Port Authority to the Meadowlands Race Track. I can't seem to find it on the NJT web site. Does anyone know how often the busses go to the Meadowlands? Or where I could find it on the NJT site?
Check the schedules for the #164 (New York-Midland Park) and #322 (Meadowlands Park & Ride) buses. Those lines run on a regular schedule.
During special events, NJT will also run the #351 shuttle bus from the PABT directly to whichever building the event is in (the Stadium, Continental Arena, or Racetrack).
There is no schedule for the 351 since it only runs during special events, but when it does, it operates on a "Continuous Loading" bases - one bus after another.
If a jack brake device opens the engines exhaust ports during the compression state to release it. How does the venting of the air help slow the vehicle? Does the unit also cut fuel? If the air is released, how is it possible to ignite the fuel in a diesel engine?
It's called a Jake Brake. Restri ting the exhaust makes the engine work harder to compress the air in the cylinder, which slows the engine, which in turn slows the tranny, which then slows the vehicle. Also known as 'compression braking' and is commonly known as the retarder.
-Hank
Hey Hank, thanks for schooling me on how a Jake brake works.
as an aside to this nyct has advised us not to use retarder on very hot days on orion as it causes bus to overheat. they have not defined a very hot day.
When did NYCT start installing Jake brakes on their buses? I have only seen Jakes on some high floor tour buses, not on city buses.
Saw and got pics of the following buses: 317, 820-(got 3 of these)
587 front and 8399. Also I saw 9282 with WS logo on the driver's side?! I rode on 4862 and had double seats on both sides?!
MCIMAN2000
#9282 was transferred from Yukon to WestSide Depot for X90 and X92 express routes.
Saw buses 3021-3022 and 3025 on Park Row today. Got pic of 3025-QM11.
MCIMAN2000
Last night on the way home, a bright red tow truck, labeled 'RTS' from Hillside, NJ was hauling RTS 3508 out of the rear yard at Yukon Depot. All the NYCT markings were removed (harshly, as you could see the gouges in the paint), including the numbers. 3508 was soaped on to the windsheild and the left-side window directly behind the driver.
-Hank
are you sure it was not 3581. we never had 3508. this company tows the buses to nimco shredding most likely.3581 came from manhattanville in 4/99 and never saw a days service at yukon.
I wrote the number down as I passed it, I'm sure. Like I said, it was marked with soap, like the prices at a used car lot.
-Hank
also to the scrap yard or on the way 3772,3775,3780 and 3774. 1700 series and 1853 still in service though.
Transit Museum store at GCT has a brand new supply of depot stickers. Walnut, 54th Street and 146th Street. $1 each. Also, for any rail fans, there is a new supply of R21 number plates (low 7000 series numbers) and station signs, apparently from the CPW stations up towards Washington Hts.
I'm going in after work, on my way to the 7 train (Let's Go METS!) and pick up at least one of each. I'll scan them, and make them available via my website. You may email me if you would like to use them on your site.
-Hank
When is your site going up if it is not up already? I would love to see it!

Wanted: Any updates about project; completion dates, resumption of service, etc.Thanks.
It's pretty well ahead of schedule, and it's rumored that service may return in September, rather than October.
-Hank
Service is retuning to the Willie B in September that is why the Brooklyn Pick is going to be a system pick not depot pick.

Can anyone tell me why the DOT chose the seating layout for the CNG Express Orions as opposed to the NYCTA Orions? Was it a money issue?
That is an excellent question. The TA Orion V's have full reclining seats just minus luggage racks, and the DOT Orion's have that cheesy seating that does not recline and seem kind of cramped. Probably a price reduction thing to get more units.
Peace
DaShawn
Could it be that the DOT Orion seating is more adaptable to transit use, in addition to express use, than the TA seating?
Good point, but interestingly enough is that the TA uses the express Orion V's on the Q32, Q13, and other routes like that. Must folks know that the Q32 hauls alot of people and they are using buses like 112 on this line.
Peace
DaShawn
If I am not mistaken, didn't the TA use the same type of seating on its GMC RTS Suburbans(except those seats were vinyl instead of fabric)and Jamaica Bus hsa been using those seats on the Grumman 870's as locals for nearly 20 yrs.
I would like to know on when the New Flyer Over-the-Road coaches will be arriving on Staten Island this month & what depot will they be assigned to. Please post information on bustalk.
Thanks,
Mike
The answer will come when it comes, and the buses will get here when they get here. People who ask the same question over and over (and over) again are generally not held in high regard around here.
David
Plus, when there's concrete news such as the pending or actual arrival of those buses, it will no doubt get quick airing here at BusTalk. It's rare for news like that to get by without one of the BusTalk posters alerting us, for which we all should be thankful.
When I see one, I'll let you know. Most likely, they'll go to Yukon, as this is the only depot with any sort of capacity for them.
-Hank
We will let you know Sarand............
Probably both Depots will recieve buses. they will replace the left of '81's and '82's and also increase compacity.
According to the information I'vew seen, due to ridership gains, they won't replace the current older buses in service, but supplement them. This has led to some to predict that there will be significant improvements in routes and schedules.
-Hank
All three New Flyer D45S Vikings will go to Yukon. They will be numbered 996-997-998!

Is there a Viking site where I can take a look at what these buses look like?

BTW, the Breda buses look real nice........
when do they plan to be at Yukon and when will the be in service?
They are suppose to be at Yukon by the end of August/beginning of September!!

I drove quickly by Trans-Hudson Express/Red & Tan on Tonnelle Avenue in Jersey City this morning, and clearly saw Green Bus Lines Orion #5536 sitting in one of the lots. I assume it is there for repairs. I also saw, but less clearly, two Orions numbered 529 and 556. Although I didn't see much of these buses other than the number on the rear, I suspect they may be Queens Surface buses, again possibly in for repairs.
Very interesting! Question, Is it TransHudson/Red&Tan that has those Orion V's that run out at Newark Airport? I remember seeing these buses at the remote parking lots and they were definitely Orion V's with Coach USA logos on them. (The Small Logos).
Peace
DaShawn
Yes, many of the Orion V's as well as the Flyer Low Floor buses that operate at Newark Airport can be seen at the Tonnelle Avenue lots and buildings of Trans Hudson/Red and Tan, which are part of the Coach USA family. As I had mentioned in a posting a few months back, there are also some former Transport of Rockland RTS buses in the Tonnelle Avenue lot. Rockland Coach/Red and Tan is the operator of most of the Transport of Rockland local routes.
Thanks Sid for the information, What kind of buses did TOR get to replace those RTS's? I saw some new MCI 102DLW3's for the Tapan Zee Express lines like the former Route 57 now TZX1.
Thanks & Peace!
DaShawn
Transport of Rockland has 35 and 40 foot Gilligs on the local routes. Like the RTS's and Orion I's they replace, the Gilligs have no rear door. I believe Red and Tan operates all the local routes, except the 93, which Short Line runs. The new MCI's are on the Tzx-1, which Short Line operates. The other TZX routes are split between Short Line and Red and Tan and use mostly older MCI equipment.
Does Rockland Coaches still operate that one RTS bus I saw one day at the garage in Westwood, NJ?
If that was a Transport of Rockland RTS (green stripe), it's been replaced by the Gilligs.
Thanks, Sid. I didn't know what company operated that RTS.
Yesterday around PM rush hour i was driving midtown to pick up my friend from the job. I was driving on 26st & 2 Ave and i saw RTS #2611 on M15 running. Never got a chance to take pictures because i was on 26st waiting to turn green. Any way it good to see RTS #2611 running on M15 because RTS #2611 is the only 2600s bus running in Manhattan. I know there is couple 2600s somewhere in brooklyn, Queens & S.I.
Peace Out
Meaney
None in Brooklyn and Queens.
The UTC Roster lists three at Yukon - 2685, 2686 and 2688. With the new Orion's coming in, they probably won't be there for long.
recently i saw 4700's series arriving in Ulmer Park. I know these buses came from Amsterdam Depot in Manhattan, and i saw #9087 running from JG depot, when i know it was Ulmer Park. After riding on buses from Ulmer Park for many years, when are they ever getting newer buses for local service? then dont have any 5000's series or 9400's either. Please help me to let me know if they are.
thanks
Dont you all have the 7500's and some 9000's and 9600's as well?
B46M Limited
ulmer park has from #7511-#7534. They have also #9077-#9110 for local, but do not have any 9600's series.
Maybe Ulmer Park will receive some 8500s from Jackie when Jackie receives the New Flyer Low Floor CNGs. Maybe they will also pic up some newer buses from Flatbush (93 and 9400s) if Flatbush ever receives the Artics. If not i feel sorry for everyone who rides the buses from Ulmer Park.
Other than some express buses in the 9200 and 9300's, the newest bus Ulmer Park has is 9110. It really does seem strange that all the other depots have some newer buses, but not Ulmer Park. Does any BusTalk reader from NY City Bus have any idea why Ulmer Park stands out as the most neglected depot when it comes to new buses?
I've been told the Ulmer Park riders are suffering because of a Labor- Management Dispute between the TWU depot chair and Brooklyn Division Upper TA management. It all started over the amount of time and pay allowed to drivers to "break in" on the 4900 series. So the buses were all given to ENY, in addition to the ones they were to originally receive. Now, several 9000's and 9100's have been reassigned as well to rub salt into the wounds and Ulmer Park receives low mileage yet old buses from MABSTOA depots. Ulmer Park has to have the highest average bus age in the whole bus division citywide. Ulmer Park depot used to have a web site but it is no more.
You are correct about the Dispute Over the "Break In" pay. Ulmer Park is the dumping ground for the MTA. I was the one who posted this about 3 or 4 mouths ago. The 9000's that are at JG will be comming back to UP when JG gets more of the New Flyer. Some one told me that JG is short to many Busses and can't me sevice in ether rush hours. But UP is so short busses that on saturday 8/7/99 the depot has to put out most of our older Express Busses on the B3 and the B64. Plus these busses go out on the Local line on the weekdays to. Now we were going to get some 8300's from Staten Island but they all went to FB instead. This is one of many reason that I might go to JG during the system pick next mouth.
Out
Robert
You say you were supposed to get 8300's from Staten Island and they went to FLAT instead.........Based on that fact, I won't believe Ulmer Park really gets back those 9000's loaned to Gleason till they're actually in the house! The low 3000's should have been sent instead! BTW: you even got shafted with those 9000's when new. I thought you were supposed to get a whole bunch, but they were split up all over the city. That is the reason why many of that fleet is not assigned in sequencial order.
I just looked at the mta bus roster and Flatbush have about 13 8300's and JG have about 7 9000's and just one 9100 (9109). I think that flatbush could give up the 8300's to Ulmer Park since it has less routes than Ulmer Park. BTW, I did not see 826 under the JG roster. I thought that someone mentioned that 826 was on the B68 a few weeks ago........
B46M Limited
i saw #8345 and #8341 at Ulmer Park, and there is a website that says Ulmer Park is to recieve #8319-#8339 from Staten Island. When JG recieves their low-floor order, what will they do with the RTS's? will they go to Ulmer Park,or other garages, cause i remeber #4685-#4719 used to be at Ulmer Park.
bus 4685 was destroyed in an accident 4 or 5 years ago
Those 4700s they got came from the best:MABSTOA Bronx division. They never broke down while they ran out of Amsterdam and before that, one of my all time favorite depots, WALNUT!
this is true. some of the 9000's series were sent to Jackie Gleason,so that means Ulmer Park loses out?
I just looked on the roster again and saw that the buses missing out of the consist @ Ulmer Park are at JG. Also Ulmer Park have 8341-43,8345,8347,8350....... I guess Flatbush have the missing buses here as well. I will check again...........

Until Fresh Pond got the 9500's and 5000's,the last new order they had were the 4000's(not including the 8100's from Flatbush and 4700's from Ulmer Park)
You forgot about the 9100's (9140 to 9186).
Is those used on the express or local buses??????
B46M Limited
The buses Bill wrote about (9140-9186) are local buses. They're at Fresh Pond Depot (actually, 9186 isn't, but the others are). 9140-9149 have Cummins engines; the rest have Detroit Diesels. The express buses from that series (1996) are 9250-9349, most of which are at Ulmer Park.
David
[Is those used on the express or local buses??????]
#9250-#9344 are assigned at Ulmer Park. i did see a few #9280's at Westside Depot on Express lines. #9345-#9349 are at Jamaica. It will be interesting to see come September which ones Jackie Gleason gets when they take back the X27 line.
Jackie Gleason is going to get the high 9200's and all the 9300's for a total of about 54 busses leaving Ulmer Park. One more thing Ulmer Park are getting the rest of the 8300's from Mother Hale, two came in on thursday.
if jackie Gleason gets 9200's and 9300's for express-what is Ulmer Park going to have runnig on the X28 and the X29? Not the old 1800's? they have scratches on the windows, the seats are horrible and are not comfortable. please let me know.
p.s, saw #8346 on B74 route on 8/14/99
You also have 9252-9256 at Queens Village for the X68
Does anybody know the history of this vehicle?? It is usually parked in the Highway District 3 lot on the north side of the GCP just west of Francis Lewis.
I took some photos of it on my way into Bus Fest '99.
I stopped again this past Thursday for a closer look. It has beige plastic molded seats over the front wheels but padded suburban type front facing 2x2 seats for the rest of the bus. It appears that the 2x2 seating goes all the way back including the last row, rather than an across the entire bus bench seat.
Also in the front of the bus the nickname "Big Ken" is scripted in small letters. I would like to type and paste a caption into my album next to the pictures.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanx
PS Great to see the site back up and running again
I while back I asked about the bus also. The bus is a former Triboro Coach T6H-5307A. I forgot it's Triboro fleet number, but it was one of the 700 series fishbowls. Maybe one of our fellow BusTalkers can provide the fleet number.

In stead off starting a new routes for southern Hylan B'Lvd extend the X2, 3, and 9 from Tysens Lane to Main Street Totenville.
Won't work, as all the existing routes are crowded as it is. What they need to do is create new routes that start at Hylan and Richmond.
Routes 1 and 2:
South on Hylan Blvd to Arden Av, west on Arden to Woodrow Rd, south on Woodrow to Rossville Ave, west on Rossville to the West Shore Xway. From the SIE interchange, west through New Jersey to Midtown (following the x17 and x31 routes), and east to the VZ to serve downtown (following the x3 and x4)
Routes 3 & 4:
Hylan south to Page Av, Page west to Amboy Rd, Amboy to Foster Rd, Foster to Rossville Av, and then the options for routes 1 & 2.
The existing routes that are rumored, the x21,22, and 23 are just re-arraged parts of the x17.

wasnt there a X30 route in staten island a few years ago? anyone know why it doesnt run anyomre?
It was discontinued due to low ridership,
Indeed there was, it originated the same time as the x31.
I'm not sure of the exact date the service began or ended, however at the time, 'Staten Island Commuter' was still running along the same route. The x30 ran as follows, as per my 'modified' 1991 map:
From Amboy Rd and Arden Ave, south on Amboy to Foster Rd, Foster to Rossville Av, Rossville to Arthur Kill Rd, Arthur Kill to the West Shore Expressway, then along the Expressways to Manhattant, where it took West St to 23st, to Madison Ave and East 57st/3rd Ave.
-Hank
A little more detail: The route is on my May 1991 and December 1991 maps, but not my January 1993 map. The route was eliminated due to low ridership, however, since 1993, the population in the area that was served by this route has DOUBLED, and home construction in the area continues to boom.
-Hank
I remember way back when the S7 crossed the Verrazanno Bridge, when did the great renumbering happen that made 90 series numbers for the limiteds and no numbers under 50? When did the switch from R to S occur? When did the express start being numbered with an X in the beginning instead of the end (The first express bus was R8X).
early in 1995. here is the list(at least i remember)-old and new:

You're somewhat off. The 'R' was dropped in the late 70s or early 80s; I don't recall ever seeing a bus with an 'R' on it. I'd assume the change occured in 1975 when the boro name was changed. The numbers were changed on a grand scale in 1989 or 1990; the express bus changes took place in 1990 or 1991.

Why were the old routes set up the way they were with single digits ending at 7 and then the S100 series? When did express busses start using the X prefix alone instead of an X suffix and a borough prefix? The first express bus was the R8X. As for how the busses were changed in the "Great Renumbering," I wonder how they came up with what route to change to what, there don't seem to be any consistencies in the renumbering.
The old numbering system drew from the numbering systems of the private operators on the island, like Isle Transportation. This stuff goes back to the 1940s and earlier.
The R8X was the TA's first express bus route, and I guess that borough/number/X was the route numbering protocol in effect at the time. Somewhere along the way, the TA decided to change the way it numbered the express routes, putting an X in front of all express route numbers instead of starting with the borough and ending with the X (B27X is another example).
David
There was indeed a method to their madness. Id you look at a Staten Island bus map, and draw a line straight down Victory Blvd; to the SI Expressway, then east on the Expressway to the Verrazano Bridge. Additionally, go to Richmond Ave (via Victory), south on Richmond to Arthur Kill Rd, and a straight line west from there until you hit the water. That's your North Shore/South Shore line.
All the routes on Victory Blvd are numbered in the S6x series. All buses to the north of Victory are in the s4x series. All buses that operate TO the south shore from the Ferry are numbered in the s7x (The s79 is an exception, as the route was changed after it was renumbered) any buses that went cross-island, without going to the ferry (with the exception of the s51 and s52) were numbered in the s5x series. All limiteds got the s9x (Originally, there was just the s92, the limited version of the s62)
Now you see the method.
-Hank
from what i heard the woman who thought of this came from the bronx and probably never visited si so your explanation makes sense.
here is the method that i saw of the routes back in 1995:
S40 series-North Shore
S50 series-Cross Island North to South
S60 series-Victory Boulevard
S70 series-South Shore
S90 series-limited
here is why they did the great renumbering:
S40-North Shore
S50-Cross Island(North to South)
S60-Victory boulevard
S70-South Shore
S90-Limited
Where did the S5 run?
B46M Limited
The s5 route is now covered by the s52 between St. George and Bay St in Stapleton. The route would be that of the current s52 between those points, mostly along Jersey St.
-Hank
i think it was part of the old S42 route
Nope. I have the maps, trust me. the s42 (the former s101) always ran the way it does, but the s5 served Jersey St along its entire length.
-Hank
this route was meant to be a failure. it serviced midtown rather than downtown and used the gowanus while the privates went through jersey. si general manager has stated that area belongs to academy. how he figures that i dont know.
Does anyone have any idea about the whereabouts of Fishbowl #4478? I'm assuming that this bus was scrapped by NYCT years ago. Her last assignment was at the ENY Depot operating on the B12 route.
I'm sure it was scrapped many years ago. It's possible that it could've been one of the Blitz rebuilds - and if it was it would've last til the early 90's.
Wayne
Even if she was rebuilt by Blitz, most of those buses haven been either retired or found new homes at other companies. Thanks anyway, Wayne.
Yes, you're right. NYCTA actually retired all of them around 1994 and some of them went to LI Bus. 4478 was a T6H-5305A while those that were passed on to LI Bus were T6H-5309A & 5310A's. They may have gotten some of the 5305A's or even the 5303 AC but if they did I never saw them operate at LI Bus.
Wayne
In the NY Post Monday August 9, page 18, is a article on why buses travel in packs. After the good folks of BusTalk reads the article, your thoughts, don't bunch them up, are most welcome.
Charlie Muller of Bedford Park Blvd.
P.S. I am usually on SubTalk since i travel by subway more than on the busses.
I would hope it's not POLICY !
At this "private" depot we have a 1/2 dozen jeeps that go out every AM & PM to key point on the line to keep the buses spaced, customers happy & deal with emergancies (shit happen you know). Now that all 70 of the Orion V CNGs are here (2nd order still pending) & we have a few more fareboxes we're "putting out", more bues every AM that is.
Disclaimer: This is not an official anouncement, just an observation by an employee who also happens to be a rail buff.

I finally got to ride #5001 on the #39 last week.....This morning I saw #6000 on the #39, but did not ride that one....I believe that it is waiting for the 10:10AM run, which the #5001 I was on ran the 1010 last Monday.
Also #6000 has been seen on #49 yesterday and last Tuesday.
No sign of #6001 yet....probably doing service in the Northside?
So far, I have accounted three of the four buses.
Quite nice on the #5001, but the negative is the 31 seats. The 6000 series have 39 seats and I believe the T is listening to input and consulting with Breda and the #1 concern on those buses are seats and possibly the loud A/C.

When Flatbush gets the Artics, will the B6 move to Flatbush or will they remain at Ulmer Park?
When Flatbush gets the Artics, will the B6 move to Flatbush or will they remain at Ulmer Park?
B46M Limited
The artics aren't coming to Flatbush for another two years or more. You have that long to work yourself into a lather over what's going to run where. While plans are being bandied about, no final decision has been made.
David
OK, what type of plans are being bandied out? The B2 and B31 going to UP? Let me know a little something.........
B46M Limited
rumor that i heard was B2 and B31 were going to Ulmer Park, though i wish that Ulmer Park got either the full route of the B82 or the B68 back. Would love to know why only 1 depot doesnt have that line.
I guess it is because both terminals are near these depots and buses are quickly dispatched out there. I believed Ulmer park had full control of the B82 when it first came into existence. Also remember the B5 came out of Ulmer Park and the B50 came out of ENY....
B46M Limited
The B-82 was the first Brooklyn route to be split between East New York replacing the B-50 and Ulmer Park replacing the B-5
Yes, the B2/B31 --> UP has been talked about. But, again, and hopefully for the last time, IT'S AT LEAST TWO YEARS FROM NOW!!!!! There's no use talking about it in August of 1999. Whatever plans would be come up with now, would no doubt change several times before the final decision is made.
David
Just speculating. You must work at UP or something.......
Or something...
David
[Just speculating. You must work at UP or something.......]
Well I am just speculatig. I am just expressing my opinion about the situation. I am not saying that all this is true. There are a lot of people here on BusTalk that express their opinion. That is all Im doing......
B46M Limited
Sorry if I gave anyone the wrong idea. There's nothing wrong with speculating; some of this board's readers are in a position to confirm or deny rumors. My point is that it's too soon to worry about what routes will run where when articulated buses come to Brooklyn. It won't be for two years, or more, no decisions have been made, and even if they are made soon there's a good chance that they'll change between now and the time the buses actually get here.
There are probably other things BusTalkers can BusTalk about between now and then :-)
David
am interested in getting current roster for suffolk Transit and MTA-LI Bus. Please send if possible,or web site to check list.

Why was this bus discontiued? I expect low ridership. I heard that there are plans to bring back an express bus to Downtown Bklyn. Can anyone verify this info?
B46M Limited
The original x8 (the number has been reused for a different route) made one trip in, one trip out, and followed the route of the (then) s7 (current s53). It left too early in the morning to attract much of a ridership, and one trip doesn't give you much flexibility. There was a franchised route from Staten Island to Downtown Brooklyn that was run for almost a year, but cancelled due to low ridership.
-Hank
Sorry about the delay, any way i will be adding more bus pictures by end of this week. I will have MCI, RTS Storage Yard, More RTS & Orion & Couple New Flyer Articulated. So any body took a pictures of New Flyer C40LF?? Go check out my page www.angelfire.com/nj2/nyctmtabus/index.html and sign the dreambook.

Having recently returned from travel abroad, I am struck by the ways in which European cities seem to have a better handle on urban transit solution than many American cities. Unfair as it is to make comparisons with NYC, a city which is its own category, we could learn from observing other cities with urgent transportation needs. Take Paris for example. All of the transit buses are low floor, the newer ones even lower than the older ones. They are all built by Renault and are very handsome and well maintained. Some of the newer ones have three pairs of doors, rear doors in addition to center doors, to ease the movement of passengers. Maybe Nova has taken its design cue from Renault, because there were some notable similarites between 995 and the Renaults of Paris. For example, the front and rear overhand was greater than the typical modern American transit bus. (Although I remember the old GM jumbo buses of the late 1940s -- 4500-4899 in NYC -- which had considerable overhang at both ends.) Also, there were front and back facing seats over the wheel wells to make the most of space. (I hope the TA will give serious consideration to the Nova Low Floor bus.) The TA tested at least one Renault bus in the late 1970s but nothing came of it. Since then, Renault design has improved greatly. Maybe the TA should look into testing these newer models. NYC seems half-hearted in its committment to accessibility by buying a few low floor buses and continiuing to acquire huge numbers of standard multi-step buses. Likewise, committment to alternative fuel seems half-hearted with a handful of alternative buses arriving amid a torrent of standard diesel belchers. Our articulated buses have nearly double the capacity of regular buses but still only two access doors. The MCI express buses have narrow aisles and only one door. These design elements do not make for rapid and efficient movement of people. While I am glad to see the variety of attractive new buses operating the streets of NY, I continue to wonder how decisions are made in NYC about what equipment to buy.
Back in the late 70's, a newspaper article ran about how the aging bus fleet was not being properly well-maintained.
The article mentioned that the only bus given any TLC was a bus referred to as the "Rodeo Bus".
It described the Rodeo Bus as being a fancy city bus that was used for expositions and conventions.
Does anyone know which bus this was and if it still exists?
Thanks.
Hey people. I am going to take some pictures of Orions and Westside Buses today as the marking of the official opening of my new bus webpage. Visit it at www.angelfire.com/ny3/nycbuspage. I just started so it looks pretty bad.
Hey BusTalk Buddies:
I Took a trip to the Washington Metropolitan Area this weekend and rode every damn bus I could ride and took some pics too! Also last night I rode a NJT Flxible METRO-D on the 108 route which uses the turnpike for about 10 minutes, this is the quickest METRO-D I've ridden, I clocked the buses top speed at 81 mph!!!!!! TAKE A RIDE!!!!
Bus Pics Taken in MD-DC:
1998 Orion V (Metrobus)
1993 Orion V (Metrobus)
1993 Flxible METRO-D (Metrobus)
1993 Flxible METRO-D LNG (Ride-On, ex-Baltimore MTA)
1995 Flxible METRO-E (Metrobus)
Orion V CNG (Ride-On)
Orion V 35' (Ride-On)
Orion I 30' (Ride-On)
Gillig Phantom 35' (Ride-On)
NABI Model 436 Articulated (Metrobus)
Metrorail Trains
These pictures may appear as guest on my page, I haven't decided yet!
Trevor
i guess bus driver should have gotten a ticket since speed limit on turnpike is 65 mph.
81MPH! I've seen buses hit that speed only a few times in my life. I saw a Liberty Lines Fishbowl pass me on 1-87 Northbound near Ardsley at about 80 MPH - maybe 10 years ago - apparently on a deadhead to White Plains.
Another time - (scary to think how long ago this is) - around 1975 on a Continental Trailways Eagle (maybe Eagle 05?) on I-10 near El Paso TX with speedo burried at 85MPH.
Most other buses I've been on including most MCIs and older 4 speed manual Fishbowls topped out around 70 or so.
I think the Westchester "Bee Line" RTSs topped out around 65 (are they all gone now?)
I've RECENTLY seen a WMATA GM Fishbowl on the Capitol beltway that was doing pretty good at keeping pace with the traffic. A few miles down I saw a WMATA Flxible new look doing about 60 MPH. Also when Green Bus Lines Grumman 870's were still new and in good condition I used to ride 552 often and it would do 75 easily.
Wayne
Wayne
The Grayhound coaches are pretty quick. I think they could hit 80 or so.
Yes, they are very fast. Even those MC-9's can do 75 MPH (some better). I guess it's only the NYCTA with slow buses.
Wayne
that is done intentionally to avoid speeding since they dont trust us. our mcis could do 80mph but most are governed at 60.
Yes, I know. What a pity.
Despite what everyone is saying ,I have seen a few drivers get the RTS's up to 55 on the Q58 and Q88 on the expressway portion between 108th street and College Point Blvd. Was even faster when you had the old new look flexibles(anything from the 5000's to 9000's) running those routes in the early 80's to 1990
I have seen some of the 9400 series buses out of Gun Hill hit the 67 to 72 MPH mark on the New England Thruway. It's cool when you have family members who are bus operators. The New Flyer D60's are goverened to go only up to 45 MPH but there are a few in Gun Hill that will do about 60 with one doing about 67 MPH.
Peace
DaShawn
Yes, they will do 50-55 MPH, but their govenors won't let them go much faster than that.
Wayne
Talk about speeding motorcoaches, three years ago my friends and I were driving back home from Washington DC and we were doing about 70-75, and a out of the blue in the left lane a Prevost H5-60 flew by at what had to be about 85 MPH. We were in a small shit car, and we definitely felt some turbulence. I was in a weird awe seeing it go by like that.
Peace,
Big D
Yes, those non-New York buses are fast and I am a bit jealous. Keep in mind though, only the over the road coaches offer a comfortable ride. As passengers, our view should not be of our lives flashing before our eyes.
I agree the over the road coaches are far more comfortable than a transit bus at speed, but NYCTA buses are just incredibly slow. Growing up in NYC - at one time I was almost convinced that transit buses are slow, but I saw Liberty Lines, Bee Line, NJ Transit and others proving that to be false. Now I enjoy riding WMATA buses as I know that it's always going to be a nice fast ride. About an hour ago I was coming home from work and I was driving at about 60 MPH along US 29 in Silver Spring (for those speed limit followers - it is 55 MPH on US 29) and there was a 1995 Flxible Metro running along side me. I do like speed and I'm not one to be frightened unless the driver is reckless or clearly cannot handle the vehicle - bus, car, train whatever.
Wayne
nyct has begun to park buses overnight here since they have used up all street parking. they are paying b/o 10 minutes extra to pick up bus here. soon they may annex the mall for their buses.
That explains the duct tape on the concrete. What are they doing for security on the site? Will they be erecting a fence around the area, or perhaps paving more of the unused parkway land?
-Hank
i assume the same security they have around pathmark none. i already noticed scratchitti on an mci today. they will be sorry when they void their warranty but the customer will wind up paying.
I have noticed scratchitti on a few MCIs already. Bus #1988 has some seats that are badly ripped; i wonder how that happened. Why dont they park some of the older buses outside instead of all the MCIs? Either way the buses shouldnt be parked outside without security watching them.
it would take brains to think of that something nyct management sorely lacks.
I wonder when they will erect a trailer on the site, and make it an extension of Yukon. Certainly a lot of activity around there this morning (7:30) They even had a SUM truck there, and a TA Suburban with 'shuttle' signs plastered to the windows.
Driver I spoke to said even though she gets the overtime to pick up the bus, she picked the hours she picked because that's what she wants to work. The 10 minutes earlier that she has to report screw up her personal schedule.
-Hank
That happens all the time on the subway side. You pick a job, reporting time, clearing time, scheduled times for your trips and lunch and the TA puts in a supplement schedule. It is now a job you would never, never pick. It is a morale killer, and the union doesn't seem to address the problem..
they have added several overtime tricks. they have to have another dispatcher to assign buses. i guess its too much for the one thats already there. that shuttle is ot and at night several bo are paid to drive buses there. the mechanic is there in case buses dont start. also you may have noticed some 80000 dollar big shots there overseeing it all.
Sure did. I usually get the 7:20 or 7:30 x31, but today there was no 7:30, which ticked me off to no end, as I wound up late for work (but not too late, as traffic today was incredibly light)
-Hank
i worked saturday and noticed a patrol car from transit parked there so add that to the overtime list.
recently i saw bus #3133 sitting in the train yard on McDonald Avenue. From my view from the train,it looks it good condition, ready to run. why dont they send this bus to Ulmer Park. If not,why is it there?
I seen it on the mta roster page as storage..........
B46M Limited
Hey Simon, here is the picture that i took last month at coney island and check this RTS #3133 out. I don't know why RTS #3133 doing in Coney Island Yard?
Peace Out
Meaney
I believe it's being used for training by the NYPD.
I saw two new RTS's in Jersey City this past weekend, #1075 on the Central Avenue line, in a plain, all-white paint scheme (no red stripe at all), and #1128 on the 125 Journal Square to Port Authority route operated by TCT, in NJ Transit colors. Off-hand, they looked very much like the NJ Transit 2600/2700 series of several years back, both inside and out. I suspect there are many more around. I've heard the first ones to get them will be the private operators, such as Academy and One Bus. If you ever run out of RTS's in NYC, we'll have plenty here in NJ!
I just learned that, effective August 1st, Academy took over TCT's former routes in Hudson County, NJ. Thus, #1128 was operated by Academy, not TCT.
The FRONT amber lights are now LED's (in NY it's still incandescent). They have also gone with the cool new lighting, like in NY.
The new drive-by-wire systems are standard on all new buses? Does the small metal box on the bottom of the accelarator affect the distence it could be push down? The new Saturns have it standard.
Hi Folks I just wanted to let you know, That Yukons 600 series orions have invaded the Casey Stengel Depot.Regards.
640, 646, 663, 668 AND 679 have arrived along with 249, 251-253. The 600s and 249 Still have Yukon Stickers on them. 251-253 have CS stickers on them.
MCIMAN2000
these buses already have cracks in them. some have been repaired at 207 st. the majority need repair. it seems 6000 series have very poor suspensions so will crack even faster. i smell something fishy here.
Can you Say Grumman 870 of 90's. The Orion V's have been going through this process since we took the first ones in 1993. I agree with you, I too smell something fishy!
Peace
DaShawn
I once suggested this elsewhere. With the B68 now at Jackie Gleason, what do people think about combining the B68 and B77? It would be a good x-borough route, esp. for people in Park Slope and Red Hook.
Of course, the B68 didn't have to be moved to JG for this to be considered.
I don't believe it is workable. First of all it will duplicate the B-75 and the F Subway Line between Bartel Prichard Square and 5th Ave/9th Street. It will also create a long route which causes problems. Look at the B-82 which replaced the B-5/B-50 . Too many complaints because of the route length.
Also at one time when the B-68 was still a streetcar route it was combined with the B-75 and later was split into 2 routes
Saw it at the Delancey/Essex Street subway entrance waiting to go back to Williamsburg Bridge Plaza at 11:35 am.
Jackie Gleason depot has a few specials on the B39.
I thought that NAT. GAS Buses were NOT to be used on the Willie B, Particularly during a construction situation. Welding and other hazards.
I wouldn't trust those large hoods on the roof. But maybe Triboro RTS CNG's were operated over the WillyB when they were assigned to express service, but I don't know. Don't forget, those 8000's fish bowls with the wings weren't allowed on the B39 when Crosstown had the route because of a side swipe.
Triboro does use the CNG Orions and TMC RTS CNGS on the QM11 and the 24W over the Willie B
nyct uses cng new flyers on manhattan bridge also under construction
Any body know where is Edgewater RTS Storage Yard?? Just post this bustalk or email me. I would like to go there and take some pictures.
Peace Out

Edgewater is on Bay St, near Front St. Big building, you can't miss it. Follow the signs for the EZ-Pass service center if you're driving, or take the SIR to Clifton, and walk east. Also the s51 bus, get off at the Clifton train station.
-Hank
you can get some pictures in the front but most of the buses are in the back and unless you get friendly with the guard at ez pass you may have difficulty.
In the Ny Post Friday August 13, page 4, is a article about our buses crawl through the city streets at the slowest speeds of any city's in the country, the TA says. The reason: Congestion, Congestion, Congestion.
Also their is a article same page about Ny Post reporter Carl Campanile who takes on the M42- from Lexington Aveune and 42nd Street to Times Square/Broadway and walks his way to victory.

and if you read it again this man should never be a transit reporter. he identifies the bus as 025. we all know there is no such bus, rather the run is 025.
And he cheated, lets not forget that picture of him jaywalking.
The reason they're slow is because they're so freaking SUCCESSFUL! Note that he makes several mentions of STOPPING FOR PASSENGERS!
-Hank
It's hardly news that buses move slowly in heavy traffic. If people want to get somewhere quickly, they should take the subway. If they just don't want to walk, they should take the bus.
Yeah, but there are but 2 places you can take a subway cross-town. How do those people take the subway?
-Hank
Very true Hank! Also there needs to be some enforcement for the supposed "Bus Lanes". We need to have some real dedicated bus ways to make the buses here much faster. Alot of places have these systems in place like in Canada and the West Coast and they are successful, yet here in New York where we have one of the largest transit systems we have the slowest buses. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out how to fix this problem.
Peace
DaShawn
Slow bus speeds have quite a few causes in addition to those already mentioned in the press (traffic; blocked bus lanes, etc.). In the 1940's the streetcars of New York had double-width front doors. Many had double-width center exits. The bus purchases of the 1950's included some with either. Check out the annual display of old buses at the transit museum. At the public bus forum in April, 1998, I was told that double doors are impossible to order because of the types of bus frames available. Yet, NY is a big purchaser and should have some influence.
A second major cause of slow bus speed is the Metrocard. Other systems use flashpasses, but ours has to be read and returned. Also, by not printing the balance on the card, the system forces smart people to wait to check the screen. Until one reads the screen, one isn't sure whether the free transfer was accepted or another full fare deducted. In the 1930's all sorts of studies were done about how to load passengers quickly. Apparently quick loading was not a priority in designing our billion-dollar Metrocard system. Peace.
Excellent point! You are correct about using double width doors on transit buses. I wish the TA would look into purchasing the New Flyer D40, the D60's little brother so to speak. It has a wider entrance way than say an RTS, actually the same as the D60. Anybody no why we have not tested or even thought about the D40 transit bus?
Peace & Thanks
DaShawn
A wider entrance does no good if all passengers need to stop at the farebox, and the area (except on the low-floors and the New Flyers) is narrow.
-Hank
It seemed that NYCTA has not had any interest in New Flyer other than for the artics. In the North American it was either New Flyer of NABI. I would've preferred to see NABI'S.
Wayne
Uhhhh....
What about the 190 New Flyer low-floor 40-footers (CNG!) that are now being delivered to Jackie Gleason Depot?
David
[It seemed that NYCTA has not had any interest in New Flyer other than for the artics. In the North American it was either New Flyer of NABI. I would've preferred to see NABI'S.
Wayne]
Uhhh...
Excuse my oversight. My goodness!
I would like to see both the New Flyers and NABI working together. I've riden on NABIs in Washington DC and Baltimore and they are a great bus. Very sturdy and great speed.
Trevor
"Yeah, but there are but 2 places you can take a subway cross-town. How do those people take the subway?"
I would assume they take the subway as everyone else does.
Seriously, there is no easy answer. The cost of building new subway lines is prohibitably expensive. Better traffic management? Sure, but also quite expensive. Adding to the cost of operating private cars in high density traffic areas? Never get voted through. One clear answer is not to create new systems, but rather fix current ones. Politicians are telling urban planners to provide quick, cheap fixes. Urban planners reply that solutions are neither quick nor cheap. Politicians then try their own ideas i.e., non-selective crosswalks and non-enforced bus lanes, to no avail. Even a former TA president once suggested elimination of all bus routes that parallel subway lines. There's a lead ballon!
Bottom line? If the city and surface mass transit cannot coexist effectively and virtually nothing can be done to change the ways of the city, it is mass transit that must be rethought from point one. As TA will (or maybe it won't) admit, very little has changed the system since the 1930s. And people probably had the same complaints back then. The difference is that back then, a system was cut from whole cloth. At this time, that same system is just being tweaked.
Yesterday while I was on the M1 heading towards the ferry I see 4194 running as a X1 -why not the private lines do it at times (running local buses on express service and the TA has been doing the reverse lately (running suburbans on the local routes).Who knows, prehaps in 10-15 yrs;when the MCI's are starting to wear down you'll see one running on the S79
That bus was converted to soft seats last year along with some 3500s and 3900s when the TA increased express service. The bus has gray soft express seats without arm rests.
they are leased for 7 years so that will never occur.
Leased from who? I thought they were outright purchased by the MTA. Please explain, any info would be greatly appreciated!
Peace & Thanks
DaShawn
I believe they are leased directly from the manufacturer. They would never be used as local buses anyway, as they have no rear door.
-Hank
these are buses refitted with express seats to help out on the lines. these numbers i have seen have the same type of seatings:
7047
7040-7046
3511
3965
3652
You can add 3574 and 3575 out of Jamaica Depot to the soft seat retrofit list.
3497, 3573, 3964, 3966-3968 are added to the list too.
MM2000
[Who knows, prehaps in 10-15 yrs;when the MCI's are starting to wear down you'll see one running on the S79.]
And maybe right before they retire them, they'll disperse them around all the depots for local service.
Just kidding.
As Hank later says:
[They would never be used as local buses anyway, as they have no rear door].
Yesterday we got a call from a customer who said that she took our bus #535 on the QM-2 and the blankty blank farebox eat her MetroCard that had almost $70 on it.
A word to the wise: She called as soon as she arrived at work, she knew thew route & bus #. This gave me the ability to call our radio desk. Wayne spoke to Bev over the radio. She dropped the bus off at my shop and we FOUND a MC in the farebox. At lunch I swiped it at Main Street (we also can call the TA & they'll do a scan of the card's activity, but that takes longer) and guess what ... it has $65.50 on it. We mailed the card that night.
So when you buy a MC write down the S/N & if something bad happens, record the bus#, route, etc. The more detail you have the more likely that you'll be able to get a refund, etc.
Disclaimer: I'm not the official spokesman for NYCT, NYCDOT or Queens Surface Corp., just an employee who's willing to make a little extra effort to provide good service to the public.
Mr t__:^)
It's nice to hear a story with a good ending. Nice work. I imagine the bus driver must have told her to note the bus number and route to enable her to report the snapped-up card. I hope I'm not giving the driver some undue credit!
Our drivers are obligated to write up a report under such circumstances. Many times the driver will pull in and ask the Farebox Repair guys for the card so they can give it back to one of their "regulars". We don't encourage this, because it could lead to problems if it was policy. Too many times the paperwork takes too long to go thru the system (every night we dump the "Capture Bin" where most of these cards go.
So, at this depot, the customer needs to call right away. TA policy may be that they don't want to do this because the employee may pocket the card & say they couldn't find it. I do it because it's no big deal for me, or the other four that had some part of returning this card (driver, dispatcher, lost & found desk, farebox mech).
Would we do it again, sure ... every day of the week, well that's another question, probally wouldn't run to Main Street every day.
Mr t__:^)
In the case of the TA, I though if one card got stuck in the fare box, no other cards can be inserted. A little slot on the side of the farebox would be opened and the card could be retrieved. But that aside, when a customer is dealing with a small company vs. the large TA, this kind of personalized service is possible. No bureaucratic transfering of phone calls. Of course it was very helpful that your customer had the bus number. The average rider wouldn't know where, or what the purpose of a bus number is.
Nor does your average NY Post reporter.
-Hank
[In the case of the TA, I though if one card got stuck in the fare box, no other cards can be inserted. A little slot on the side of the farebox would be opened and the card could be retrieved.]
- The TA & "private" versions of the Farebox are the same, except the TA vacuums the money out while we dump it.
- It's not a little "slot" it's a door. The drivers first action should be to "turn the wheel" inside that door.
- There is a "Capture Bin" where the used "Transfers" go. MetroCards aren't supose to go their, but do sometimes. Also it may "come out" later. If it does the driver may shove it into the Bin.
- If one of the O-rings snaps the MC unit may shut down and keep several cards inside (this happens rarely).
So you see "if one card gets stuck" the unit doesn't shut down right away. The problem is most problemsome where you have a bunch of folks wanting to board & a full bus of folks eager to get to work. The driver has to ask permission to start giving free rides & asking them to collect fares in their hand isn't the way to go either.
FYI, The TA has a shop "CES" that spends a lot of it's time changing these belt & o-rings. I have four guys that spend a portion of their day doing it. We have very few O-rings snap in the field, but have a number of MC units failing for other reasons. It's something we spend a lot of time working on because it's real money to us when they work.
Mr t__:^)

That's great news for most of us bus fans,Steve. I'm thanking you in advance for your time and effort.Do you have any further info. on the addresses of the N.J.T. bus garages? Dave Mackey is currently compiling data on this subject. Thanks again!!!
Sorry,I dont have that info

Triboro MCI Classics 791 and 783 just arrived this week. Hopefully they will be transferred and not scrapped.
Last Sunday night Aug 8, approx 9:30 PM, I was driving past the Staten Island Mall on Richmond Ave. At least 20 NYC Transit express buses were parked at one of the mall entrances. Is this normal procedure (park the buses there the night before the AM rush) or just a special equipment move?
Depends, where were you driving? Yukon (and Castleton) have a serious space problem, and, as noted in other messages, buses are being parked wherever they can find space. It wouldn't surprise me if the TA is leasing space from the Rouse corp (who own the mall). THey currently park the buses on the street around the depot, and at the AK turnaround.
-Hank
I was driving NB on Richmond Ave., with the mall on my right. The buses were parked along the curbside of a mall entrance - presumably where the mall park and ride is located. I do not live on SI - I was travelling from NJ to my LI home via the Outerbridge, Richmond Parkway, Richmond Ave., and the SI Expway to the VZ Bridge - avoiding traffic congestion on the SI Expway further west.
si park and ride no longer exists as no one used it. what you saw was nyct new pathmark depot.
I'm thinking that wasn't actually the mall, but Independance Ave, between Costco and Pathmark. The park-ride at the SI Mall is still signed, but no one seems to park in the mall lot assigned for that purpose, as there is adequate on-street parking, and most customers in the area are walkups. If you look anywhere near the major x-bus terminals, you'll see large numbers of cars parked there, though not neccesarily in a designated area.
-Hank
I think MTA should build a new Bus Depot in Staten Island and should call Tottenville Depot. I know they have $$$$$$$ but they don't want to spent $$$$$$ to build a Depot.
Peace Out
Meaney
I agree Statan Island needs a new depot all thought I think it should be located along Arther kill Road some were between the bus terminal and the correctional fiscility. It should hold about 150 busses all express for use on thhe x1-9 17/19 and any new south shore route.
THey have been planning to build a new depot in the Charleston section for some time. It was in the original draft of the last 5-year plan, but removed. The land the city intended to use is now being sold/leased to a developer for a shopping center and a new school. The next budget, considering the current situation, should most definately include a new depot, wherever they decide to put it.
-Hank
there is also politics involved. molinari speaks out of both sides of his mouth. he plans to have hearings on franchises in the fall. they could build a depot right now if they were so inclined. they are getting 100 more mcis in october so well see where they put them.
If Yukon and Castleton Depot has a problem with space, cant they move some of the express line to Edgewater(X18 and X20 maybe)..or is there another place to put like a parking lot(like they have for 126th Street depot in manhattan)?
Edgewater technically does not exist. It is currently used for RTS storage (like many other areas around the city). I don't know the situation around Castleton, but they are using an area near my home for parking the new MCIs.
-Hank
I been around there a few months ago. Looks abandoned. That was a depot? There is a large shack and some railroad tracks running through there. When was it closed?
It was closed in 1985, after several fishbowls were turned into fish food when the pier collapsed. Currently, they use a section that is on land for RTS storage. The depot was a sweethart deal for the administration of Anthony R. Gaeta, as the land was owned by his brother-in-law, or something to the effect. Fortuneately, Yukon opened around the same time.
-Hank
What happened to the busses?
Well, they were pulled from the bay, I'd assume they were dried out, cleaned, and returned to service. No electronics in those days, so I suppose they just let them dry, inspected (salt water), and put back on the road.
-Hank
no room in the garage.
I noticed something on most new buses. Under the accelarator there is
what seems to be some sort of small metal box. A wire comes out of it and into the dash. When the pedel is pressed the box seems to get in the way. There is a ramp underneath it. That seems to be the max depression of the pedel. Is the box some sort of electric device. What
is the ramp for?
How do the air operated accelrators on older buses work?
That box is part of the electronic accelerator, the movement of the pedal is transmitted electronically to the throttle body, where a step motor adjusts the throttle plate, and thus, engine speed.
-Hank
In answer to the second part of your post, air throttles have a valve under the pedal which feeds are back to a slave cylinder on the engine. The more air fed back, the more the slave cylinder opens the fuel rack.
It's real simple.
And if the slightest air leak develops anywhere in the lines, you lose your throttle in no time at all.
The scary part about air throttles is that if you start up a bus with a/t, and the air tanks are empty, the engine will not rev until some air has been pumped into the tanks.
It won't start anyway, as most city buses have an air-start system, rather than electric start.
-Hank
Hank, you're talking thru TA eyes, i.e. the TA fleet is air start while the "privates" in NYC are elect. So our maint. trucks do a fair amount of jump starts in the dead of Winter in the yard.
Mr t__:^)
NYCT's going back to electric starters. The most recent Nova, Orion, and New Flyer orders have them.
David
[It won't start anyway, as most city buses have an air-start system, rather than electric start.]
Usually the air starter works off of a separate tank. It is charged up by the main air system, but is independent in that it supplies ONLY the air starter. However, the bus still needs some electricity (i.e. batteries) to actuate the valves and engine run relays. Even with an air starter, a dead battery will keep the bus from starting.
Our Gillig Phantoms had air throttles AND air starters. They'd start up just fine with the air pressure guage reading "0", but you couldn't use the throttle to build up air faster, nor would the fast idle work until a head of air built up in the main tanks.
Of course, if we wanted to miss a trip, we just went up into the electrical cabinet, pulled out the engine run relay, and hit the starter button until all the air was gone from the starter tank.
On a MCI 102DL3 operators menu, there show a telltail lamp labeled
"Air Filter Restriction". Anyone know what that mean or what its for?
It means if something plugs the air intakes, i.e. some newspapers suck up against the air intakes, and not enough air is passing through the air filters, the warning light will light. It can also be activated when there is so much junk on the air filter itself that not enough air gets through to the engine.
Hello:
I am looking for any GMC fishbowl owners in the NYC area. If you are an owner, or know anyone that owns one, please e-mail me at my address..
Thanks

if you are searching for gmc fishbowls in toy design, i know of places that carry it in nyc.
Hey Bus Nuts--
I put up a bunch of changes to the Bus Page today.
Broke the big bus picture collection down by borough and added some to each category
Added a whole page of Ave B & East Bway buses in Manhattan
Added a page of WMATA buses on loan to New York City in the 80s
And a bunch of NJ bus pictures
Enjoy!
-Dave
The pictures of the Ave B bus company bring back a lot of memories. Being a Lower East Side resident in the 1970's as a boy I remember vividly riding these buses and playing at the garage at the FDR Drive and Clinton street. I use to play bus driver and flip on the switches on and off just to grow up and drive a bus for Mabstoa 20 years later!
Whatever happend to the buses from the Avenue B Bus Company?
I don't know what happened to their older equipment, but the Grumman 870's (53096-8-1) they were due to receive went to NYCTA for Staten Island express service.
Wayne
Coach 623 from Ave B & E Brdwy was rebuilt and resold to the Miami Valley RTA in Dayton Ohio who numbered it 817. Served there through the 80's until they retired it and it's now at the Ohio Museum of Transportation in Dayton colors.

I guess I never realized some of the demographic differences between
Brooklyn and Staten Island. On the latter, the buses are generally scheduled, I think, to coincide with arrivals and departures of ferries (every half hour during the day on weekends), since most buses terminate /start at St. George. I was waiting for someone (in my car) on Nostrand Ave. between Ave. U & V on Saturday afternoon between 12:30 and 1:45,and there was easily a B36 bus travelling in each direction at about 5-7 minute intervals the entire time, with B44's not much less frequently. More people, more buses, I guess.
Both the 44 and 36 run every 10 minutes so what u were seeing on the 36 were drives thing to catch up with there scheduals.
You're right about demographic differences between Brooklyn & Staten Island.
Nearly all Staten Island buses are scheduled to coincide with the arrivals & departures of the ferries. Even lines that have more frequent service (s48 Forest Avenue, s78 Hyland Blvd.) still have patterns during the day and rush hours where one bus will leave St. George without a ferry arrival, but the next bus will have ferry passengers on it before leaving.
Staten Island is the most suburban by far of the boroughs. I suppose for transportation for shopping or pleasure, Staten Islanders mostly have cars. But if they have to go into the city where parking is a problem (and commuting over the Verrazano and through Brooklyn is time-consuming) they will then use mass transit, be it a local bus to the ferry or an express bus into Manhattan.
The SIR is also closely scheduled to meet the ferry. 24 hours a day it comes and goes into St. George depending on the ferry timetable. Only during early weekend mornings does it run trains that do NOT meet the ferry. The ferry runs only once per hour Sat. & Sun. till noon. But the trains run every half hour then.
The other four boroughs sometimes time their buses to meet subway schedules during off-peak hours. But subways run frequently enough (unlike the ferry) that they are not that coordinated during weekdays.

OK, I'm sorry I have to post a message just for correction, but this always irked me. It's HYLAN Boulevard, not Hyland, Highland or whatever.
About 3:00pm today, i was on Orion V #6018 on my way home and i saw Orion V #6001 on Bx21 at Boston Rd going north look brand new with new paint. I look up the Bus Roster & #6001 is not on the list. Where the hell Orion V #6001 been? Also I saw #195 with brand new paint & clean.
Peace Out
Meaney
PS GO check my Bus Page. Yesterday i added more bus pictures.
Also 6000 arrived on Sunday and 6 RTS's were shipped out today to various depots in Brooklyn including 8012 which went to Ulmer Park. I know the other buses went to Flatbush depot as well some 4000's were in the batch as well.
I saw 6000 today on the M1 and took some pics of it, should have them developed next week when the roll of film is finished. Interestingly 6000 has the old setup for the side destination sign with it's placement on the bottom of the window instead of the top like the current crop of new 6xxx series Orion's.
P.S.
Why did 6000 get sent back to Orion Bus?
Peace & Thanks
DaShawn
On Queens Surface and other privite orions, there is a red guarded
switch on the dash labeled "Motor Guard Override".
Anyone knows what that switch does? Is it like the DDEC4 engine
shutdown overide? I don't see that on NYCTA Orions.
When the engine overheats, runs out of fluids (oil, water), sensors will activate the MotorGuard. This shuts the engine down. However, there will usually be a warning buzzer, or light, so when these come on, the driver would activate the switch to possibly get the bus out of an intersection or traffic. Once you let go of the switch, the engine kills.
Saw 2685 on S91 today. (SI Ferry). Took pics too.

Are the brakes on the MCIs held by air or released by air? When the parking brake is apply, what happens? The system is like the ones on the subway? The parking brake drains the brake pipe?
I know that on Van Hool the brakes are held back by air.
You need air to apply the brakes on highway vehicles. Parking brakes are spring applied, and air released, so that if the air pressure in a vehicle drops below a certain setting (usually below 60 p.s.i), the parking brake is supposed to come on automatically.
It is the same no matter whether it is a Neoplan, MCI, Van Fool, or whatever make.
Older buses (pre-1983, I think) do not have the automatic parking brake application. I know where I drive, our 1980 RTS's do not have the feature, yet our 1983 Gillig Phantoms did, as do all of our newer buses.
At this link Is a photo of two busses, an older one, and a newer one, what is the newer one supposed to be? I've never seen it before.
The older one, 8857, was part of the 1968 order received by the TA. Some, like 8857, had wings, the lowest and highest numbers did not. The newer bus, whose number I could not quite make out, was one of the Grumman 870's in the huge, pre-RTS order. These buses, of course, except for #236, were returned to Grumman/Flxible, allegedly as defective, and most of them wound up with NJ Transit, in Cincinnati, or Springfield, Mass, after rebuilding.
I understand some also went to San Juan, Puerto Rico as well.

Hi
I spoke to the Personnel involved,,the Book was supposed to be avaialable in June,,usual publication date
It is still at the printers ,as of yesterday,,with no targeted date set
Steve
There was a post over at "SubTalk" suggesting an Airlink Shuttle from the N line at Ditmars Blvd. to LaGuardia Airport, in the event that the N line does not get extended.
I was thinking of an alternative, to create a Limited Stop version of the Q19A. As opposed to the current Q19A which runs to Astoria Blvd and 82nd Street, this Limited Stop Q19A would loop LaGuardia Airport.
What are your opinions?
DOT attempted a limited stop service connecting the Queens end of the 63rd Street Tunnel and LaGuardia Airport. It was a fifteen minute ride and provided fairly frequent service throughout the day (every 20 minutes from 6 AM - 11 PM). The service never picked up.
I think your proposed route would work better, but still requires the passenger from transferring from one mode to another. Also, the city's process to adopt route changes is laborious and couldend uptaking years to change.
A single seat option from the airport to the city would be extending the inter-borough express QM22 (Jackson Heights to Manhattan)into the airport. The cost is also reasonable ($3 one way).
I suggest increasing the frequencies of the M60 between Astoria Boulevard N Station and LaGuardia Airport.
Another suggestion: Offering express runs on the Q33 between Roosevelt/74th IND/IRT Stations and LaGuardia Airport.
How about a new bus/train trip from Manhattan. From Whitehall Street on the BMT Broadway Line stopping at Rector,St,Cortland St,City Hall,Canal St,14th St,34th St,42nd St,57th St/7th Ave,Lexington Ave/63rd St,Rooservelt Island,21st Street/Queensbridge. Train to be called W Line with connecting bus to be called Q-49 which will operate from Queens Plaza,21st Street/Queensbridge, then non-stop to LaGuardia Airport. Service will operate every 20 minuates weekdays between 6AM and 9PM only. Cost is$1.50 each way. Q-49 will operate from Stengel Depot. Service to be coordinated at 21st Street/Queensbridge Station
How about having the Q48 run either as limited stops from either Main Street or Shea Stadium to LaGuardia or like the Q10A express service from Queens Blvd. to JFK via the Van Wyck, have a service call the Q48A running from Shea Stadium running express along Roosevelt to the GCP then on the GCP to LaGuardia. The Orion Suburbans can be used for this service. It would be operated out of Stengel of course.

I know that in other cities, transit companies paint the bus ID numbers on the top, but they didn't do that in Philadelphia.
Well, today I saw a pictures of a bus on the news, I believe it was Neoplan bus number 3488, and it had it's number painted on the top right side.
The number painted on top of the busses is for the police use if the bus is ever report hiject or stolen. The number can be seen from the air for easy spotting of a bus. So I gest that it is a good idea for SEPTA to start to do this.
I was told that NYCT does this so that the dispatchers can work from their second floor offices, and see who came in when.
-Hank
Hope some of you Philly area folks can help on this one. SEPTA buses and trackless trolleys all have a large, orange colored light on the top left side of the vehicle, in addition to the normal top marker lights. What is its purpose?
The orange light is for emergencies...I believe it notifies the police.
Peace,
Big D
PS has anyone in Philly seen or ridden 7101?
On most buses the Fast Idle button is used to run the engine faster.
Some menus say we need the fast idle for HVAC. My question is why do the engine need to fast idle?
On cars and gasoline engines, the engine auto idles up. Does diesels do that?
There are signs on NYCTA buses saying not to idle more then 1/3 throttle while charging the air. Why?
The fast idle is needed with a/c on so that the a/c compressor can compress the refrigerant at a fast enough rate to keep the bus cool. If you let the bus run on normal idle, it just doesn't make it that comfortable.
It's not only NYCTA where the buses shouldn't be run more than 1/3 throttle to pump up air (air for the brakes, doors, etc., they don't mean a/c). Reason? The air compressor only pumps so fast, anything more than 1/3 throttle is just making a lot of noise and wasting fuel. Once you go past 1/3 throttle, the amount of air the compressor handles doesn't increase.
Also fast idle keeps the diesel breathing better so it does not load up with soot. If you let the engine idle for a long time without fast Idle and then go gack into service it will roll out a lot of smoke for the first block or so.
Steve is right about the air and if the engine is run too fast with out a load it can cause internal damage to the engine. Its a good way to drop a valve and not good for the bearings

Tuesday I got a call from our Radio Desk Dispatcher. He had just got off the mike with a driver who reported a customer loosing his MetroCard in our farebox. The card, apparently, didn't & wouldn't come out in the normal way, but the farebox was still working ... sounded a little fishy. Anyhow the driver would be in the field until about 9 PM, so I asked the dispatcher to tell the driver to drop the bus off at my shop & passed a note to the afternoon shop man. At night things get a little crazy, so I wasn't too hopefull, i.e. too many things had to happen for us to be successful, e.g. card might pop out before 9, driver might forget, etc.
The next day I was surprised that a card was found. I visited Main Street and was again surprised that a swipe thru the reader revieled that it was in fact the customers' weekly unlimited local card, still good until 8/22. Our lost & found group had his phone number. When called he made a lot of noise about his lost two trips on his card. A co-worker in that group became aware of the customers' address and was willing to drop off the card on her way home. The customer said thank you .................
Can you see the TA doing anything like this ?????
P.S. Most of the above is NOT part of our job & if it occured every day we probally counldn't do it (100,000 customers a day) but once in a while we don't mind. I made sure the dispatcher & my mechanic knew we found the card and were able to return it to the customer. I also thanked them both for their part in this.
Disclaimer: This is not a official statement by this employee.
Mr t__:^)
That's pretty good! I can't see the TA coming even remotely close to that.
Yesterday 8/18/99 I was talking to driver at Ulmer Park who goes to all the union meeting. He told me that the X27 is only leave for about 4 to 6 mouths. The TA needs to put in pumps into the depot. The pumps are to remove the oil and fuel the leaked into the ground water over the years. The leak is suppose as bad as the one that is at Flatbush Depot. The TA is tring to keep it out of public knowage so thay won't say anything. like what happened at Flatbush.
I DO NOT KNOW IS THIS IS THE REAL REASON FOR THE X27 LEAVING, IT IS JUST WHAT I HEAR, SO DON'T QUITE ME.
THANK YOU
Robert @ Ulmer Park, is that you?

Yes it is me. My computer fliped out while I was typing the massage. It must have posted the blank one before I rewote it.
Some questions on the unique NYCTA Mack C-49 (1956,6000 series) That roamed the streets of Brooklyn and Staten Island.
1) When first delivered were outfitted with soft seats, vandalism replaced them with green fiberglass ones. One unit I remember till this day stuck out. #6129 had pink fiberglass seat like the 7000 & 9000 series GMC old looks. Can anybody verify this.
2) At least one unit had experimental flourscent lighting. Anybody know the number ?
3) When first delivered,which borough received the 6000,6100 & 6200 series?
4) I was told they finished out their careers on Staten Island.
What year and which series?
Thanking you in advance for your knowledge,
Bill Newkirk
I know 80 were assigned to Staten Island with Ulmer Park ,West 5th Street and I believe 5th Avenue the rest in Brooklyn. They were used to replace trolley service on the B-35 Church Avenue and electric coach service on the B-23 Corteylou Road routes and used for the extenstion of the B-69 Vanderbilt Avenue route which replaced the discontinued B-50 Mac Donald Ave trolley. The change was made on October 31st,1956
I also remember them when brand new being on the B18 (Foster/18th Avenues ???) as I went to St. Jerome's at Newkirk & Nostrand and always saw them there when the route went through some of the smaller streets around the school.
Steve:
That would be the "B8" , 18th Avenue route.
Bill Newkirk
I can remember seeing 6000 C-49s also on Coney Island Avenue. I think they terminated at Grand Army Plaza. This was in the early 60s. Eventually all the TA Macks seemed to end up in Staten Island. Then there were the 10 C-49s 3000-3009, later renumbered 4900-4909, which had passenger operated exit doors and flourescent interior lights unlike the TA Macks. Did these 10 classy buses eventually join their sisters in Staten Island, like some Mabstoa GM buses similar to the 7000s which ended up in Queens, or did they finish their days in Manhattan? It's really too bad that one of them was not preserved!
I rode Mack C-49s in 1962-63 when I attended Midwood High School. I rode B-8 and B-6. They were then used (as I remember seeing them) on B-4, B-5, B-6, B-8, B-9, B-11, B-34, B-64, B-68 and B-74. I think they were also used then on B-1 and B-3. I saw only 6000-6148 in Brooklyn, and numbers up to 6308 in Staten Island. Also, almost all had bright green tops, but a few, like 6104, had the older style grey tops. I also remember seeing Macks with numbers like 4629 on M104 and M100 in Manhattan in 1966-67. Were these renumbered Brroklyn C-49s? Does anyone know which other routes they were used on in Brooklyn? I doubt, as someone mentioned that they were ever used on B-23 and B-35. I never saw them on those routes, only the GM 4000-4499 series.
The Macks you saw in Manhattan on the M100/M104 were reunumbered Surface Transit C49s that MABSTOA inherited. They were not ex-NYCTA Macks. My recollection is that they lasted until about 1965 - by 1967 the three large orders for GM 5303's (1965 5000s, 1966 6000s, and 1967 8000s) saw the end of all Mack buses on MABSTOA routes.
As I remember, when those C49's were delivered, they had the silvery-grey tops.
The turquoise (light green) tops seemed to appear around 1961 or so;
seems like when some of the GM fishbowls (mostly MABSTOA) got repained, they also got the light green on the top of the roof, and you could hardly see it from the street. (New fishbowls were delivered with solid green up and over the roof until the a/c units in 1967...then they started having a white roof panel.)
Thanks for the info! This brings back memories. I now recall that the C-49s with light green tops had their serial numbers painted in large bold light green type underneath the right front window while the ones with grey tops (such as 6104) had the serial number in the middle, in smaller, silver-colored type. Also, all the C-49s in Brooklyn had a "B" prefixed to the route number on their route signs and added "AVENUE" or "STREET" beneath the name of the route, unlike the vast majority of the GM old looks, which did not have a "B" prefixed, and did not specify avenue or street, etc. I wonder if anyone could provide a listing of what was on the route roller curtains of the C-49s used in Brooklyn, after so many, many years?
(I've had a little difficulty posting this message)
[Did these 10 classy buses eventually join their sisters in Staten Island, like some Mabstoa GM buses similar to the 7000s which ended up in Queens, or did they finish their days in Manhattan?]
I don't know what happened to those 10 Macks, but I don't think the Mabstoa GM buses similar to the 7000s ended up in Queens. Those Mabstoa buses in the 2600 series ended their days in Manhattanville (or its predecessor), mostly on the M11 route (long before it was transferred to Hudson Pier), but also on some of the former Fifth Avenue Routes (now M1, M2, M3, M4 and M5). Those that were renumbered in the 3000's (former Surface Transit buses - I forget whether they wound up in the 3100's or 3200's) finished their days in the Bronx. I don't remember any GM old looks finishing their days in Queens other than the 7000's and many of the much older 4500-4899 series.
Actually, I did see a few 2600 GMs running out of Jamaica Depot along side 7000s in the late 60s. This may have been a unique occurrance, but I saw it.
Fresh Pond ran Old Look GM's 7000's and 7100's until retirement in 1973. Also within that last year they ran a few 9000's. I vaguely remember seeing Macks running in the mid 1960's. If Fresh Pond ran these, does anyone know which series.
I remember the old look 7000s from 1962 when they replaced the 4000-4499s on the B-49 route. Can anyone tell me which other routes they were used on in Brooklyn and how many of them there were?
This might not be 100% accurate, but from memory I believe the 7000 series was 7000-7207 or thereabouts. When delivered new, the 7000's ran out of 125th Street in Manhattan (mainly the M15), the lower 7100's ran out of Casey Stengel (then Flushing) and the higher 7100's ran out of Jamaica (there was no Queens Village depot). When Queens got its first new look fishbowls (2000 series), which would have been around 1962, many of the 7000's went to Flatbush, where they ran on the B44, B46, B49, etc. (but not too often on the B41). I forget where they went after that, but many did wind up back in Queens.
Good memory about the bus numbers. You only missed by one (1). According to the GM Production records I have, they were TDH5106-1117 through TDH5106-1325, They were NOT in order by NYCTA fleet number, however.
The list I have seems to have problems -- buses 7024 and 7024 are NOT listed in the jumble of NYCTA fleet numbers, yet the serial/fleet number spread matches. I'm gonna have to go over it closely before I post it so I don't spread mistaken information.
(One of these days, I'm gonna post a list of ALL the NYCTA/MABSTOA (& predecessor) buses as they came from the factory.)
Make that 7024 and 7025.....missing.
The Surface TDH5106's that were delivered as 3020-3059 were renumbered to 3221-3259 and then 3260. I guess they figured it was easier to do it that way, changed just one number (I remember most of them had an oddball "2" in place of the "0" when this was done) and then make the 3020 to 3260, as 3220 was occupied by one of the a/c TDH5301's that were originally Fifth Avenue 1-10 and became 3211-3220.
The 3221-3260 series TDH5106's were oddballs in a sense -- they had flourescent lighting, push-out rear doors, and a flourescent-lit headsign that bulged from the front of the bus (as did the 2645-2694 series in Manhattan. The 3221-3260 buses worked on the Bx12 a lot when I lived off of Fordham Road until 1965, so I'd assume they were assigned to Kingsbridge (??)
The Surface 3020-3059 and Fifth Avenue 2645-2694 were the LAST two bunches of TDH5106's built by GMC, in July, 1959.
Real good data on those unique GM's with the protruding rectangular roll sign box in front. They were beauties especially in their early days on the Fifth Avenue Coach routes. One note: the 12(Pelham Parkway) bus ran out of the Coliseum depot;the old 19(207 St.Crosstown) ran out of Kingsbridge---both lines overlapped on a good stretch of Fordham Rd. from Sedgwick Ave. to Southern Blvd.
Thanks....it's only been 40 years since I moved out of that neighborhood, and 30 years since I moved to California!
Is MCI and DINA one company? They have the same web site. Dina only makes one type of bus, the DINA Viaggio.
The dash doesn't look like MCI's it looks more like Volvo.
DINA (Diesels Internationales Norte Americana) of Mexico bought MCI a few years ago.
The DINA Viaggio 1000 (also known as the Marco Polo) is the only model they make that is imported into the United States. DINA has built MANY buses in the past, notably some Flxible highway coach look-alikes, and some city buses back in the early 1970's that looked like an early, crude version of the GM RTS. There were some of these in Tijuana, Baja California until about eight years ago; I've also seen one in a postcard from Mexico City.
The MCI buses are still built in Pembina, North Dakota. The Viaggio 1000, as I've been told, has its body shell fabricated in Brazil and then shipped to Mexico for completion into a useable bus.
just as an aside this reminds me of the north american free trade act of several years ago which the astute leader of atu 726 so vehehemently opposed. he was the first to demand mci buses.
Marco Polo is the Brazilian company that makes the bodies for the Dina Viaggio 1000 as well as Volvo buses in South America, and probably other manufacturers down there too.

The vent. building near Queensboro Plaza is used to vent which station
and/ or tunnels?
It's a new building.
There is a building located near 39st and West street.
I think its above the Lincoln tunnel.
Is it some sort of venting tower. Its made of brick about 70 feet high and vents on the side running the length of the building.
Last two days while im on the bus Bx19 & i noticed that some of the buses just transfer from Casey Stengel Depot to MCH Depot. The number i saw is #177, 188, 202, 207, 211,& 216 running on Bx19. I have the pictures of #211 on my page at Casey Stengel Depot last month & now #211 is in MCH Depot. Also yesterday morning on my way to work & i saw Orion #???? on Bx36?? Are the Kingsbridge Depot going to bring Orion buses back? or they were just testing on Bx36? Any one know about this? Just post it on this bustalk. Thank You
Peace Out
Meaney
At Mother Hale we are down to only an handful of RTS's which means that Casey Stengal must be getting more 6000,s. The Bx36 orion was propbably an x piece out of Mother hale or Amsterdam depots.
Casey Stengel is getting 600 series Orions from Yukon depot.
i thought castleton was getting the 600 series from yukon..whats going on?
No, it was mentioned in earlier postings that the 600 series Orions are going to Stangle and that the number of new 6000 series Orions would be dispursed more evenly so to speak amongst Yukon and Castleton.

Hi, there; does anyone have any infr about the shuttle service bet. Hewes and Essex for 8-28-8-30? Will it be operated out of all Bklyn Divisions as well as Man./ 126 St?

On MCI buses, the "air low-tag axle" means the tag axle suspension bags are low. What if the other air bags are low? That light only show the tag axle pressure? The driver wont know if the other bags are low?
On the DINA Viaggio has a light "Drive axle Overload". Does that mean that the tag is unloaded? The air bags on the drive axle is low?
On the MCI buses, the tag axle can be "chained up" for certain reasons, one being a flat tire on that axle. Actually, each side of the axle can be chained up independently. There are air valves inside the compartment on the right side just to the rear of the axle, they are located on the wheelwell. Once the air is released, one must back the wheel up on a "run-up block" supplised with new buses (an angular piece of wood with a carrying handle) or back the tax axle up on a curb. Once it is raised, short (four-link) chains can be used to hold it up off the pavement.
When either or both of the air valves for the tag axle are turned so the air releases, the warning light will come on to alert the driver that the air is out of the tag axle. Without that tag axle on the ground, you lose about 30% of your braking power.
Not sure of how it works on a Dina, never been near one of them. (And no intentions of doing so....)
In reference to those new MCIs purchased by NYCTA for Staten Island express service, why the orange sticker on the back of the mirror by the front door ??
Bill Newkirk
Lincoln Tunnel bus lane 102" permit thing. No orange patch, no bus lane. Some of the RTS that went to the Brooklyn Depots have them as well. There's also a similar patch on the left rear upper.
-Hank
Some of the Queens express buses have them also, one exception being 9351 out of Queens Village. This local bus has the sticker on the mirror and it always confuses the heck out of me when it comes down Hillside Avenue in the morning.
9351 confuses me too because it doesn't have cloth padded seats and the case inside the bus is white not black like the other 9350-9699 series has.
MM2000
Are you sure NovaBus RTS #9351 doesn't have cloth padded seats? Well i was looking at the bus roster and NovaBus RTS # 9351 to 9525 have cloth padded seat & #9350, #9526 to 9699 have hard seats. There is some kind of mistaken or what!
Peace Out
Meaney
#9351 did have cloth seats when she came from the manufacturer. This unit along with 9350 were originally at Gun Hill Depot and did their acceptance runs and then when the full order started to get delivered they were transferred to Queens Village. 9350 did not have cloth then, but 9351 did have cloth.
Peace

More MTA and DOT pics were added to our site. Check em out and sign the guestbook while you're there. Thanks.
MM2000/KB316
It doesn't matter if you put 5, 10, or a million more pictures on your site. They are all from the same era. You got to put pics from the early 80's, late 70's, and other times to have a decent site PERIOD.
Nope, sorry I have as early as 1981 RTS.
MM2000
I dont have to do anything I dont want to do. I do not care for buses from the 70s or 80s. Keep your opinions to yourself. We werent around to take pics from the 70s.
I agree! If that is the case why doesn't James donate some pictures from the 70's to Quote, Unquote make the site more "Interesting"! Or the next best thing make your own site with this particular content and everything should be fine. Once again let's not get besides our selves telling people what they should or should not do, instead make a suggestion instead.

In the August '99 issue of NEW YORK CONSTRUCTION NEWS the following two MTA projects are listed: SOUTHEAST BROOKLYN BUS GARAGE and ZAREGA AVENUE BUS MAINTENANCE FACILITY-----no further info. on these jobs!!! Anyone out there with more info. to share on this?
Southeast Brooklyn Bus Garage is the new Command Bus facility
does anyone know the completion date for zerega ave. we staten islanders will love going there for 19a course.
The Zerega Av complex will be a new central location for the Central Maintenance facilty currently in East New York depot. Also all training will be at this location including new operator, maintainer and dispatcher training and 19A requalifications as well.
I recently saw MTA NYC buses on Route 17 near Binghampton, 4 hours away from New York City. Anyone have an explanation?
Were they MCI's? In that case they may be enroute from Pembina, North Dakota (where they are built) to New York City.
New Flyers might also come down that way too, they are built in Winnipeg, Manitoba and completed in Clarkston, Minnesota.
Actually since New Flyer has expanded their facilities in Minnesota they don't that anymore. According to their website all buses built for US properties are fully built in Minnesota.
Peace
DaShawn
Just jumped on over from SubTalk with the following question I
hope you guys/girls can answer!...
What sort of wrecker trucks and mechanics vehicles(if any) does NYCTA operate to assist disabled buses, do they operate from each garage or from a central location...??
The trend here in London (UK) is to operate small van based vehicles with mechanics to attend breakdowns and very few wrecker trucks remain. When they are required to give either a full front or rear lift, London Buses hire them from wrecker companies.
I'm interested to learn what procedure NYCTA operate, although as a tourist (Englishman in New York etc) I can not recall ever seeing a broken down bus!!! although native New Yorkers will no doubt have something to say about that!
Many thanks
Rob :^)
London
UK
I know NYC Bus has a fleet of wrecker and support vehicles as for if they're based out of each shop or a central facility I couldn't tell you. I've seen the RTS buses actually pulled by a wrecker. I guess the front bumper design prevents it from being lifted by the front end.
At this depot we have a Wrecker that can lift & tow a bus. Also we dispatch pickups that closets on the side & liquids on the bed of the truck, i.e. Anti-freeze, diesel fuel, etc. Many times the panel trucks can get the bus going again. But, sometimes we have to call a wrecker company for a tow.
So, like London the wrecker isn't the first piece of equip. to go out.
BTW, how's that system upgrade going in London ?
Mr t__:^)
I don't know where the wreckers are based either. These days it's a rare sight as NYCTA buses are being maintained much better.
Wayne
Thanks gents for you replies,
Wayne has stated what I thought, the fleet being maintained much better stateside. No visit to London could be complete without seeing a rear engined double decker (Leyland Olympian/Leyland Titan/MCW Metrobus etc) with its rear end engine cover open, or a traditional Routemaster
with some seats taken out and leaning upright at the conductors platform, both signs that the bus is waiting assistance!
All companies here operate small mechanics vehicles, these being garaged based but usually mobile during the "rush hour" at key intersections.
Regards
Rob ;^)
I have seen wreckers at the following locations:
1) East New York
2) 126th Street
3) Yukon
4) Queens Village (I Think, Can't remeber the sticker on the side)
These are some of the ones I have seen either on the premesis or dispatched and traveling around the city at one time.
Peace
DaShawn
are any of these companies getting new buses? lately all i see are MCI buses (and a few GMC's from NYBS). I mean, MCI are nice but is there anything new comning,if they are let me know.
All the "private" companies asked for additional buses to replace equip. ready for retirement and to fill the need for additional service that is system wide problem.
Mr t__:^)
am interested in Suffolk Transit Bus Fleet Roster. Anyone who knows it or can get me the link, please send it. thanks.
Your best bet would be to call Suffolk Transit directly.
Look under County Gov't listings in Suffolk phone book.
Apparently the buses are owned by the county and given to private operators to run. The ops get a fixed rate per mile to cover operating costs and a profit. Only the county has a key to the fare box which they empty nightly. Since the equipment is in the hands of many companies, the county govt or a legislators office is the place to start.
I'm thinking about posting pics of 995 on my homepage. If anyone is interested in seeing them, please respond. Keep in mind that I am extremely lazy and if I don't get a few positive responses...
I'd be happy to see your 995 pics. I could post them on my "Your Pics" site. Email them to me. Thanks.
MM2000
I would love to see your pics of 995 also Alan. Please post them where ever you can!
Peace
DaShawn
Alan, I would like to see them also.
Alan I think it is safe to say that most of us here on Bus Talk would like to see your 995 pics.
While driving south on I-94 from Milwaukee to Chicago yesterday (Sunday) about 4pm, more or less, I saw a bus with MTA New York City Bus markings. It was a CNG-fueled bus, as it was marked as such and had the tell-tale covered tank on the roof. It already had New York plates, but it seemed to be new as there was plastic shrinkwrap around portions of the front of the bus.
So what is the story on that?
Possibly a New Flyer CNG being delievered to JG?
dear sir,
please could you send me any photos and information about american buses, trams, coaches.i am a bus spotter and collector in chester England.i am 11 years old and look forward to your reply.
philip ingran

Sure, I am 12 years old and in NYC. You can go to my bus page at www.angelfire.com/ny3/nycbuspage/

Why would you put shrinkwrap on the front of a bus? what purpose does it serve?, i can see paper on the floors to keep them from being marred up, and various other shrinkwrap/bubblewrap on various items but shrinkwrap on the front of the bus???
i guess bugs? those things are a bitch to clean off
Went to Killington for a four day weekend. Here are my bus observations.
While on the NY Thruway saw a lot of Greyhound MC-9's. Wondered why they haven't updated their fleet? Is it financial??
Also saw a MCI 102DL3 label Coach Canada. Same swooping C as Coach America. Wondered if it is a subsidiary.
Killington has its own service called the Bus-Bus. Vehicles appear to be 20 passenger buses built on a step-van chasis. Did not see one standing still to note mfg.
Stopped in Burlington on Friday afternoon. Bus service is provided by Chitttenden County Tranportation Authority (CCTA). Saw about 5 buses.
All are RTS. One however was a 30 footer. Interesting thing about all their buses is that the front bumper is extended to accomodate a bicycle rack. Didn't see any bikes on them so I could see how they operate.
On the way back to Killington saw a PD-4106 sitting in a yard. Probably converted to a motor home. Had an interesting cap on it similar to NJT.
Grehound has updated it's fleet with new MCI 102D and DL3's, also those might not have been MC9's you saw, but MC12's. You have to look at the following to tell the difference. 1)Square Headlamps, 2) Square Rearlamp arangement similar to the older 96/102 C,B and A series, 3)Fleet numbers. The earlier MC12's were in the 1000 series and went to the mid 27 to 28 series. These units have Detroit Diesel 6V-92TA DDEC III's in them. The later units in the 29 and 3000 series were later models with Detroit Diesel Series 50 engines rated at 315 HP. The reason for that was by the time the later units were built the older 6V-92TA was no longer available for New Buses. To answer your second question, Coach Canada is the same as Coach USA. Coach USA wanted to use the Coach Canada name to seperate the US companies from the Canadian. Different names same game, same company.
Hope that this helps you out a bit and hope you had a great time.
Peace
DaShawn
Does anyone know of any web sites that would have rosters of Greyhound buses, information about day to day operations, or other people interested in Greyhound?
I know about the company website. Thanks for any info. Paul
The NYC Bus Pictures pages were made more user friendly today, check it out! Also along with some other updates!

I read a post on BusTalk a few weeks ago about the New Flyer at WS. What is the final decision about which routes to put the New Flyer artics on? Thanks.
Peace Out
-Clayton
I was down at Second Ave. & 39th St. in Sunset Park, Brooklyn today and the stored buses are growing. There must be at least 75+ RTS buses in there. Are they for sale? They probably are never going back into service since all TA logos, Bus #'s and fareboxes are gone. Most #'s are spray painted on the windshield. As I was leaving a caravan of 8 tow trucks brought more buses to this location. Some of the digital signs displayed "Not in service". That is more true that ever for these buses. UPM
If you look at the MTAs web site, there are indeed buses available for sale. Nothing said about the price
This is a large listing,,probably will take a few
days

THESE ARE VERBATIM AND UPDATED TO AUGUST 1999
I DO NOT GIVE OUT THE CODES,PLZ DONT ASK ,,THANKS
A couple of questions here:
1. How come the B25 is the only bus out ENY that have via sign? My
My guess is that it goes to Downtown Bklyn but the B45 also goes
to Downtown Bklyn as well.
2. I saw that there limited postings for the B6 and B49. I hate to
ask but will this happened soon? I think I know the answer to this because I also saw the B36 to KP.........
3. Same thing for the B86?
That is all for now.........
B46M Limited
In many cases,,signs are given for future readings,,B40 to kings Plaza or the B68 stillwell av
Regarding LTD and via signs,,I only printed up what I had before me
Steve
B40 to Kings Plaza? That seems like a stretch. What route would it take?
Probably combined with the B78
Steve
I might be out of the loop on this one, but is the B86 supposed to be a proposed future route?
From the looks of the headsigns, it looks like a B1/B64 thru-route combo. Is this supposed to happen?
It is supposed to be a combo between the B1/B64. Dont know if it will happen?????
B46M Limited
B1 B64 B86 B68 Stillwell Av,B36 Kings Plaza,,,were part of the Bklyn SW Study
But they delete past readings? (B5, B47, etc)
Hi
Whatever I posted ,is what is listed,
***Please note,to Sarand,Timothy,Michael,***
---I do this in my spare moments,, I do not have a "real" computer,,I have the Webtv,,therefore, everything I post,,has to be typed by hand,,
If anyone wants me to stop posting this stuff,,let me know,,you can do the postings and Agendas
My next set will be for Queens, then Staten Island, and then the DOT
Steve
The B49 already runs LTD service
Steve
The B49 runs scheduled limited service? Ocean Avenue?
When did this happen? I have a Sept. 1998 map and it's not shown. I don't recall seeing it on the MTA web site, either.
BZZZZZT! Not so. The B49 does not have Limited service at this time, and never has. You may be thinking of the B41, B44, or B46, all of which run out of Flatbush and have Limited service.
David
[The B49 already runs LTD service]
I dont think the B49 runs limited service yet.........
B46M Limited
According to the MTA Service stuff,,the B49 is starting LTD on Sundays/???
Just looked at the website. There is no mention of the B49 Limited. However the B7 is being extended to CI Av. There are also new weekday hourd.
The M101 have limited service on the whole route now.
Service are to begin 9-13-99

Hey ppl! I saw a strange sighting, 6113 on M101 this morn. This isn't the first time I saw one on the line. Can I please have an explanation.
Thanks.
Peace Out
-Clayton
those are extras. they run from Amsterdam depot, and go on the M101 during am rush hours. they terminate at 129th St-Amsterdam Av(where there depot is)
What depot is the 101 with? Westside?
ok,heres where all routes on 3rd av/lex av come from:
M98-WestSide
M101-Manahttanville-and the Orions are from Amsterdam
M102-WestSide
M103-Manhattanville
Not all orions are from Amsterdam. If you're luck enought to get a low-floor Orion VI Hyrbid Electric. That is from Manhattanville.
Trevor
I have looked at the pictures of #995 and noticed that there appears to be a booth-like structure in the back of the bus on the right hand side.
The seat do not run from side of the bus to the other. There are about 2 or 3 seats and then this structure takes up the rest of the space in the rear.
Is this the A/C housing? I don't think it can possibly be a restroom, although it does look like the ones seen on charter busses.
Thanks.
That is actually the left hand side in the rear. These buses use a left hand side mounting system and a ZF drop rear axel arrangement. The Nova LFS which is what 995 is, as well as the Orion VI uses the same arrangement. The HVAC unit is roof mounted as indicated on the LFS, and I think it is also on the Orion VI, but don't quote me on that since it doesn't look like it on the newer verison, it was on the 1996 prototype. The LFS we have is powered by a Detroit Diesel Series 40E with a Allsion B400 world transmission, and is a conventional clean diesel with catalytic converter. The Orion VI's are hybrid electrics. Hope this information helps you out.
Peace
DaShawn
I was on an M42 today that had a Passenger Information System. It was a red led desplay where the stop requested sign usually is. It displayed the current date and time. There was a control panel beneath it. What is this and what purpose will it server (display next stop?)
That was 9624. It was presented at some type of conference in NYC about 5 months ago. I don't know anything else.
Where is the radiator of a MCI located? Its not on the side. On the 102DL3s and 102DL have vents on the top. Is that the radiator?
If it is why do they put it up there?
Has anyone worked on a DINA Viaggio (Marco Polo) coach?
I would like to know if the B68 readings that had before:
B68:Coney Island
Stillwell Av
via CI Av
& it's Limiteds for the B68(future)were deleted from the Aug 1999 reading signs.
Please post on bustalk.
Sincerely,
Michael
Timothy, now that FDNY is busy posting this huge volume of sign material would you please at least count to ten before you start bombarding him with your requests for more info.and explanations.Give the man a break---there's much more to come.
Timothy? I thought it was Sarand????????/
B46M Limited
I posted whatever is CURRENTLY on the listing,,no more,,no less
I would like to know if the M20 signs were added in the August 1999 reading signs because they weren't posted.
Please post on bustalk.
Sincerely,
Michael
They were not in the listing,,date Aug 1999

aka MTA Boy
This past week New Coliseum Depot already start building & could be ready by late next year. Also Old 100th Street Depot is ready to torn down next month & could start building by early next year.
Peace Out
Meaney
It's about time they got to work on Coliseum.
On my way home this evening, on 5th Ave, approximately 34st, I spotted a accident involving RTS 9315 on the x28; and Orion 136 out of Yukon. Looked like a sideswipe, as the left rear corner of 136 was mashed good. AAttending the scene: A TA wrecker, a dispatcher's truck, 6 persons in TA uniforms, 3 on 9315, three writing on clipboards outside the door, 2 patrol cars, and an FDNY Ambulance. Stupid me, I didn't think to pull out my digital camera.
-Hank
Talk about a bad day. On my first trip down 5 Av, I saw the aftermath of a taxi/pedestrian accident (looked fatal). On my next trip down 5 Av, I saw the accident Hank mentions (and I forgot to take pics). On my last trip, I got to come back from Jackson Heights in "non-revenue mode," and didn't see any accidents (I used 2 Av, an infinitely preferable choice to 5 Av). Of course, driving home, I got caught up in that nasty accident on the Gowanus. Just another day in the trenches!
Bus9315 was being driven by a student operator. the regular operator and the student were both taken for BAT.
The student driver will now be sent back down to be retraind by the TA. The regular operator did not have to go down to for a drug test becouse he was not driving the bus. As for the student if he/she is put back into service he/she will already have one strike aganest him/her.
I saw new RTS buses 653 and 654 today. I rode 654 today on Q60 and the seats surprised me because they were red and gray. I have a question though. Buses 623-654 are from Command. Does anybody have the ex-command numbers of each of these Green Buses? All I know is that Green Bus 641 used to be Command 393. Please email me, I'd really appreciate this. Thanks.
MM2000
GBL bus numbers 653 and 654 are former TCC bus numbers M5-M6. They have received diesel engines. Bus numbers 655-658 will be hitting the streets in the next few weeks and are former Command buses.
I'll update my QS, CTC and GL rosters as of tomorrow, 8-26. 2 more QS buses were added to Command Yard in Bklyn:
238 and 248. 238 looks like it's gonna be scrapped. More buses will be added.
MM2000
For June & July we cut 197, 201, 203, 226, 238, & 248.
When the "local", i.e. hard seat Orions start comming in you'll need to have several pencils & plunty of paper to keep up with the retirements.

Command Bus Vehicle involved in accident on the Gowanus Expwy,,Hamilton Av nr Home Depot---15 injuries,,,we were on scene with SOD
No further info available
FDNY
Command MCI Classic #431. The whole front is smashed. Im sure they will scrap this bus.
Having the front end smashed doesn't necessarily mean the bus needs to be scrapped. You'd be surprised what can be fixed on buses.
Out here in California, Culver City Municipal Bus Lines had an RTS involved in a collision with a wall, and a palm tree. The entire front end of the bus smashed when it hit the wall that was as high as the bus, and then it dead-center hit a palm tree which fell over and creased the roof.
That bus is still running to this day.
Usually it takes MAJOR frame damage to render a bus unuseable and be scrapped. At the agency where I work, we have lost ONE RTS bus; it came out second in an altercation with....A RAILROAD LOCOMOTIVE!!
The bus involved in the accident on Tuesday was bus #470 (Botanic Gardens Wrap Bus) On Wednesday Command Bus #431 had an accident with another Command Bus #4965. The only reason why I think the bus will be scrapped is 'cause it is 11 years old. There are still two Triboro MCIs sitting in Command storage. It would make more sense to just replace 431 with one of those buses. Right now the DOT inspectors are testing the brakes on 431 which was known by the drivers to have bad brakes.
Same went for QS buses 277 and 334. Back in '95, 277 was involved in an accident where the whole front was smashed in. Heard rumors that it would've been scrapped but it's running to this day. Was shocked to see it. As far as 334 is concerned, back in '97, this bus disappeared from service. Then in '98 I heard this bus was in a bad fire. July '99 was the 1st time I saw that bus in 2 years.
Green Lines had 1 bus also like this: 1163. In '96, this bus was on the news and the whole left rear was on fire. One day in Fall '98, I saw this bus running on Q11.
To paraphrase what I'm saying, you'd think 431 is gonna get scrapped b/c it looks bad and the front is pushed in, but you never know, it may return again. Kev, keeps your fingers crossed that his bus has the same fate as the buses that I've mentioned.
MM2000
I agree and just beacuse a bus is 11 years old does not mean that a company will scrap it. There are more things to take in to consideration. For example, the structual integrity of this bus is probably excellent for a vehicle of this age and if that is the case they will not scrap it. The MCI Classics are excellent buses and for that reason alone with the type of frames and engineering these buses should be around for some years to come. They are just a newer version of the fishbowls and they should have the same sucess record.
Peace
DaShawn
They will be around til around 2001. I agree they are good buses but the DOT is heading in the CNG and wheelchair accessible bus direction.
That is true Kevin! Only the future will tell.
Peace
DaShawn

There is some kind of NYC express bus that stops on the Broadway side of the Flatiron building and charges more than the usual $1.50 and claims to go to Brooklyn. Does anyone know where in Brooklyn it goes and how? Stops??
NYC Transit's X27 (Bay Ridge), X28 (Bensonhurst/Coney Island), and X29 (Coney Island AVENUE) express buses stop on Broadway at W. 23rd Street.

Where and who operates the Q50? Never heard that the line is in existence.

Soon NYCT will take over OBX1 & will be Q50. I don't know which Depot going to have Q50. I heard that while reading the newspaper early this year because alot of peoeple from the bronx go to Queens & people from the Queens go to Bronx.
Peace Out
Meaney
Either 1 of 2 depots or both will get the Q50:
Casey Stengel and/or Gun Hill.
I can see it now: Artics and Orions operating together.
But why change from QBX1 to Q50? Q50 sounds like a bus running strictly in Queens. Most of the run is in Bronx, not Queens. So what bus would serve CO-OP City from Pelham Bay Station? And why would Queens Surface give this QBX1 route up?
MM2000
My Brother Eric Updale just happens to be a New York City Transit
Bus Operator assigned to the Yukon Bus Depot on Staten Island. He is currently assigned to the S74 Bus Route that operates between St. George and Tottenville. As for myself, I am just a bus buff who enjoys collecting pictures of Vintage T.A. Buses. I am trying desperately to visit a former Transit Authority 1963 GMC New Look Bus
#3758 at the Jackie Gleason Bus Depot. When I contacted the former
Fifth Avenue Depot, a manager informed me that I must first call
NYC Transit's Central Office on Jay Street on how to schedule an appointment to visit the J.G. bus garage. Therefore, can somebody from NYC Transit help me in scheduling an appointment to visit this
truly classic 1963 GM Bus 3758 at this Brooklyn Bus Garage so I can photograph a picture of this green body bus?
Too bad you couldn't make it to the Transit Museum's BusFest 1999 this past May 23rd, where bus #3758 was on display. For my picture of it, see the BusFest 1999 section of photos under Additional Bus Pages at this site.
Saw 3758 yesterday. It is in great shape. It is filthy I guess they don't wash it. Also there was 5227, 8928 and museum RTS 1201
What condition is RTS 1201 in? I would love to see it. What depot is it stored in?
OK, I think 1201 is in good condition and I know for a fact that it is stored in JG in Brooklyn.
Peace Out
-Clayton
Its in Quality Control, I seen it myself!
Trevor
Why don't you ask your brother to take you there to see it?
Rosters were updated as of August 27th. Some buses that are at Command Yard in Brooklyn are being scrapped for parts.
MM2000
Does anybody know the numbers of the 4 ex-command buses that are being converted at Green Lines as 655-658? Please email me and let me know. Thanks.
MM2000
I have a question about this depot: Do the buses change daily at this depot or do they have same buses for about a week then they switch?
Also I saw a weird bus while I was passing in my car, 630-1?! Why is this bus still there? Just curious.
MM2000
I believe they change everyday. I saw a few Orions when I was out there a while ago. I have no idea about 630-1.
Rockaway Garage only run these Lines:
Q21,Q22/Q22A,Q35.
Express routes occasionally QM16,QM17.
I saw this bus on Wednesday along Cross Bay Blvd with Q25 destination signs?! QS has the Q25. Why would Green Lines have this?
MM2000
As far as I'm aware, all DOT buses with digital signs have all DOT sign readings. Either the Bus Operator was playing a joke or he or she hit the wrong sign code. BTW, the Command 350-series buses with digital signs aren't DOT buses; Command owns them.
David
[I saw this bus on Wednesday along Cross Bay Blvd with Q25 destination signs?! QS has the Q25. Why would Green Lines have this?]
What are they up to on list 6022- test given May 1997.
They were down in the 2000s in February i think.
Anybody know??
I saw A Diesel LI BUS Orion with the back that looked funny. Where the engine is supposed to be in the back, it looked as if the bus was made specially since it seemed as though it was in a special compartment that jutted out. Why does this bus look that way??? I was on the N6 near Queens Village and I believe that this bus was assigned to either the N!,N2,N3, or N6.
I don't know anything about the bus you saw, but for the record it was assigned to the N1, N2 or N3, but not the N6. N1, N2 and N3 buses come out of the Rockville Centre garage, where all the Orion diesels are. N6 operates out of Roosevelt or Mitchell Field (or whatever they call it), where all the Orions are CNG. That garage has some diesels, but they are all Gilligs.
here is the list of what MTA-LI Buses come from which depot:
Rockville Centre-N1,N2,N3,N4,N14,N15,N19,N25,N31,N32,N33,N36,N62.
Mitchell Field-N6,N15,N16,N20/N21,N22/N22A,N23,N24,N25,N26,N27,N28,N35,
N37,N04/N41,N45,N46,N47,N48/N49,N50,N51,N54/N55,N57/N58,
N70/N71/N72,N73/N74,N78/N79,N80/N81.
On weekends, all buses run from Mitchell Field.
Isn't the Lynbrook Depot still open-I know the N4 use to operate out of there
depot is at rockville centre. n4 comes from there
The N4 originates in Freeport from depot at Rockville Centre, and travels Merrick Road all the way to Parsons & Archer where the Q25 & Q65 is just a couple of blocks away.
Hi Folks Today I saw A Green bus numbered 5503. It has an Orange destination computer sign. Any reason why?
Check out this site.
http://www.busnut.com
Check out the board. Very useful.
Anybody know what will happen to these buses after their diesel conversion? Will they go back to Triboro or will they go elsewhere?
MM2000
heard they may go to command or green, but not sure
They are not going to Command.
On the MCI MC-9s on the dash there is a switch covered by a red cover.
The label said "Engine Emergency Shutdown". What does this do and why do they need it? Doesn't shutting down the Master Switch shut down the engine? I head of a engine "running on". What is this? The engine runs after its shutdown? How does this happen?
Sometimes the master switch doesn't do the trick.
Yes, diesel engines can "run on" as you mention. The Emergency Switch, when actuated, closes an air valve in the air intake of the engine (it's sometimes known as "dropping the damper"). This cuts off the air flow to the engine, and it dies.
Once this is done, the driver has to go to the engine and reset the damper to make the bus run again.
i heard through a driver last night on the S53 that it takes alomst 20-25 minutes to put a wheelchair person on the MCI's. Does it really take that long, and is there a way to cut down the time. if there is,let me know, cause i really wouldnt'want to be on a MCI that's picking up one.
I was told it takes about 10, depending on spotting the bus. Trollesbus would know...
-Hank
It really only takes 5 minutes, Sorry I operated myself! But of course if you have a really stupid driver who if dumb-founded by the system it could take 10!
Trevor
Hi everybody! I have finally put up my own website with special thanks to Trevor, Kaybee & MCIMAN2000. Thank you guys! I invite everyone to see it. http://www.geocities.com/motorcity/garage/9475.
I hope you enjoy it!
Peace!
DaShawn
Hey D,
The web site is bangin'! The pictures are off the hook and much blessings to you and your site! Welcome to the NYC Bus Pictures Family!!!!!!!!
Trevor
aka MTA Boy
Your president will sell out again 12/15/99! Will you vote for 20/50 willie again? May God help us. Only 10% with givebacks, because thats all workfare willie gives to his membership.
Kindly keep the union and anti-union rhetoric out of these forums.
-Hank
Will transit workers strike if they dont get another decent contract?
No. Because the NYCTA control's willie and co. and we bus operators do not stick together with other union memebers for a better contract. This union will get screwed again with willie on the top. The mayor gave himself 30%, what do we get? Ill be happy with no raises just as long as no givebacks are delt, then prey willie retires! Good luck to you and your families.
As I said before, kindly keep your union and anti-union rhetoric out of this forum.
-Hank
Why? This is important information for people who are concerned or have interest in the bus system just as any other aspect of the bus system. The deal is this, no contract can lead to no drivers, no drivers can lead to no bus service. I think I safely say for everyone, we need our buses! Now if you do not want to hear the "rhetoric" then don't read the thread. Secondly that is not your decision to make, last time I checked this is the site of David and he should be the one to say that this type of information or rhetoric is not to be placed here. Once again let us respect one another and our ideas!
Thank You & Peace!
DaShawn
And since this has come up on Subtalk, and quickly degenerated into name calling and cursing, it is being kept out of there as well. No one who ever posts about the contract and the union-management thing has yet to have a clue to what they were talking about, as has been demonstrated by the flame war that inevitably breaks out in the thread.
-Hank
No one is calling you any names or cursing at you Hank. Take care, oh and dont forget to VOTE!
While I agree that the topic usually degenerates into a name calling affair if kept fair and informative many rail and bus fans would appreciate all information they can get. But if a phony name and e mail is used then usually its not very informative at all.
I agree with Fernando's comment. I've even talked off line about work related matters to several new SubTalk/BusTalk friends. That's one of the aspects that's great about this site for me. Granted sometimes folks write before they think about it OR try to use this site to grandstand. If we regulars nudge them back in line, then maybe they'll see that "you get more flys with honey then sour grapes".
Mr t__:^)
OK Hank, i understand this is a hot topic which you rather not discuss or have any one else discuss. Well anyway good luck on contract 99 and maintaining order at this site!
When I lived in Brooklyn in the late 50's and early 60's there were some gaps in the route numbers in Brooklyn. Missing were B-27, B-28, B-30, B-32, B-43, B-50, B-51, B-66, B-73, and B-76. The highest number at the time was B-78 Mill Basin.
I believe B-27 was a line that ran on Fulton Street from Alabama Avenue to the Queens line, supplementing the B-25. It was discontinued in 1955. B-50 was the McDonald Avenue trolley, discontinued in 1956. B-51 in those days was unassigned--the Manhattan bridge route then was B-15.
I would appreciate it if anyone could provide information about these missing routes. Thanks.
Did the B-78 run into Mill Basin back then, or did it turn towards what would become Kings Plaza or what? If B-50 wasn't around, what was the name of the Flatlands Avenue bus recently merged with the B-5 to create B-82?
orignally, the b50 ran from Pennslyvania Av-Seaview Av to the Rockaway Parkway Station. only the b6 ran on flatlands av
What about Flatlands between Ralph and Flatbush? In the era of the original poster's question, which was the bus from Rockaway Pkwy Station to Starrett City (or, more accurately, the future Starrett City)?
There was no such route then. Nor was there any service on Flatlands Avenue.
If there was no Flatlands service, what did the B6 do? Unlike subway lines, this site doesn't talk much about the story of bus lines (except for Manhattan). I would like to know about some bus lines, like all of the busses at Kings Plaza (2,3,9,41,46,78,Q35) and the 82, 100, 42, 6, 7, hell, all of it!
The Ninth Street Bridge over the Gowanus Canal is always open now, but when it was functional, did the B75 and B77 use it to get to Smith and Court, instead of going via 2nd and Hamilton? Were Downtown/Heights streets two way once so busses in both direction would use Smith Street? or trolleys (68)?
In 1962 the B-6 went from Cropsey Avenue and Bay Parkway to Avenue J and Ralph Avenue
The B-6 in 1962 went to Rockaway Parkway and Glenwood Road or Ralph Ave and Glenwood Road. The B-6 was extended to Rockaway Parkway in June 1960. I grew up in Canarsie and remember the changes
growing up in mill basdin from 1974-1978,i remember some of the lines:
the B2 ran 24 hrs/7 days a week.
the b3 ran to either 74th St-Ave X or E 71st-Av u to 25th Av-86th St(sometmies trips ended at kings plaza).
mostly all the lines u mentioned above have stayed the same excpet for the b78. back in the late 70's, the b78 didn't run on sundays. in 1989,then ran on sundays.
There were a couple of posts months ago about the origin of theses routes. You might have to GO WAAYYYYYYY BACKKKKKKKKK!!!!!!!!!
B46M Limited
Can you give me some clues as to posters in the thread (not those who are extremely frequent though) or subject names so I can search. Or dates.
I believe the post was put up in April or May. The post title was Route History of the B2,41,46,78. I remember that I also added info about the B9 going to Riis Beach along with the B46 during the summer....
B46M Limited
Sorry, I didn't find anything, it must have expired. Can you repost anything not already discussed this month?
Ill try to find it and let you know........
B46M Limited
I tried to look for it but it only went to April 12. I must have post earlier. Anyway you might find some other interesting things like the B11-Rockaway service. Just click on the several eons on the search message page........
B46M Limited
I remember, for a couple of years in the '80s, during the summer months only, some B9s and B46s were extended past Kings Plaza all the way into Rockaway Beach (Riis Beach).
The TA in the late 1960's had a Route B-84 which ran from Rockaway Parkway Station to Cozine-Ashford. In 1970 it bwcame the B-6 Shuttle and in Feb. 1972 it was merged with the B-6 route.
In 1974 the TA started a Shuttle between Rockaway Parkway Station and Starret City. It was later designated the B-50 route and it merged with the B-5 in 1992 to become the B-82
you forgot two routes,B88 and M41. they were culture loop buses, ran in the 1970's,but dont know when they ended
When did the service between Rockaway Pkwy and CI ave begin?
B46M Limited
It was 1995 that the two routes were combined, not 1992. I remember clearly.
Sorry, It was my error. You are correct
The same time the B47 and B62 became the B43 and the B30 was discontinued..........
B46M Limited
So what was the name of the B-30 route?
The B30 got discontiued altogether. The B24 takes over the existing route. BTW, IIRC, I have ridden the B24 when I was young. I beleive the B30 operated out of JG on it last days. Can anybody clarify this? How come it was not at ENY or FP?
B46M Limited
The 30 it ran untill 1995 between Sunnyside 48th street and Queens B'lvd and Greenpoint Kingland and Meeker Avenues.
It may have been called the 24s at on time .
