What's new? More news...
Thu Mar 11 2010, More new articles from Electric Railway Journal. Back to the IRT today...specifically, the power house: "Tests on 30,000-Kw. Turbine/Data of New Interborough Turbine" (1916/1921), "Interborough Commissions 60,000-Kw. Turbo-Generator Unit" (1919), "Interborough Power Plant Enlargement" (1915), "Power Distribution in the Interborough" (1926).
Tue Mar 9 2010, Three in a 1915 series of articles about the "New York Municipal Car" aka the BMT Standard and one followup article from 1921. (There were actually 3 more articles in the 1915 series but they were published in 1914 and archive.org doesn't have ERJ from prior to 1915 posted. The missing articles are "Design," June 6, 1914; "Body," June 13, 1914; "Trucks, Brake Rigging and Draft Gear," Dec. 26, 1914 in case anyone wants to find them in a library.) "The New York Municipal Car -- Brakes and Auxiliaries" (1915), "The New York Municipal Car -- Motors, Control, Conduit and Collectors" (1915), "The New York Municipal Car -- The Lighting" (1915), "New York Municipal Car Improvements" (1921). And two miscellaneous articles, also from ERJ: "How Can the New York Transit Problem Be Solved?" (1922), "New York, London, Paris and Berlin Transit Compared" (1923).
Fri Mar 5 2010, More new old articles from Electric Railway Journal: "Concreted Track for New York City Subway" (1929), "Track Materials Specially Designed for New York City Subways" (1929), "Well-Planned Schedules Speed Subway Track Construction" (1931), "Mayor Hylan Held Responsible for New York's Subway Ills" (1925), Interborough to Have Enlarged Shops 1924), Interborough Inspection Shop Methods -- Modern Inspection Facilities... (1924), Maintenance Methods on the Interborough -- Repair Shops of the Interborough... (1925). Enjoy!
Mon Mar 1 2010,

Here's some stuff that has been uploaded recently: The Construction of the Harlem River Tubes... (1915), overview of the engineering behind the Lex line's Harlem River tunnels. This had a lot of PSC archival photographs along with it that had been scanned really well (sometimes book scans are kind of poor). The Subway Problem (1911), William Gibbs McAdoo's offer to construct the "Triborough" subway system, a precursor to the Dual Contracts. Loading Speed a Major Factor in Design of New York Subway Cars (1931), Electric Railway Journal's discussion of the R1 subway car design. Coney Island Shops - revamped the main page for CI and added 8 new articles about the shop facilities from Electric Railway Journal 1926-1929.
Mon Jul 14 2008, Not much new added lately (other than photos, which you can always see on the Newest Images pages). Today uploaded a random set of single line diagrams to the Historical Maps collection.
