Other Areas

Some areas the tour did not visit are:

Pneumatic Shop: The Pneumatic Shop was built in 1985 at a cost of $7 million in capital funds, and has approximately 30,000 square feet of working space. The Pneumatic Shop is responsible for supplying all air brake units for over 5,803 subway cars and approximately 500 non-revenue cars.

Traction Motor Shop: Each year up to 4,000 traction motors receive basic overhaul and other required repairs. The Coney Island Motor Shop is the sole source for traction motor overhaul for the entire subway and SIRT fleet.

Small Motor Shop: Performs SMS overhaul for the air conditioning, pneumatic compressor motors and AC blower motors at the rate of approximately 3,000 units per year.

Shoe Beam Shop: Processes approximately 2,500 shoe beams per year. All the beams are remanufactured to original equipment specifications and include the latest engineering upgrades.

Battery Shop: Restores up to 1,000 battery sets to a like-new condition each year and is the sole source for battery overhaul in NYCT.

Other Facilities

The Coney Island Complex provides a number of other facilities, including Materiel (Main Storeroom along with various storage areas), a Medical Assessment Center, a Police Firing Range, a boiler house, transit training favilities, and plant maintenance. Plant Maintenance consists of house maintenance, support shops, plant service and the car wash. House maintenance and house electric service and repair all building needs in the Overhaul Shop. They maintain and repair over 1,000 pieces of equipment, including overhead and wall cranes, the wheel truing machine, lathes and all hydraulic equipment.

The Support Shops (Wood Mill, Machine, Sheet Metal, and Blacksmith Shops) manufacture and rehabilitate all required items for the SMS program as well as Car Repair Shop and equipment needs.

Plant Service cleans an area of 427,000 square feet daily and, in accordance with government regulations, is responsible for the safe containment and disposal of any hazardous waste. The proper disposal of all garbage, wood and steel scrap, as well as the recycling of waste oil generated by the overhaul facility, is handled by this group.

The Car Wash cleans the exteriors of over 1,000 cars approximately once a week for a yearly total of 50,000 washes.

Interesting Facts

Within the Overhaul Shop there are four 30-ton cranes capable of moving entire subway cars from one work station to another.

A wheel weighs 800 lbs., while an entire wheel and axle assembly weighs 2,400 lbs.

25 of the 75 acres comprising the Coney Island complex are enclosed.

The average weight of a 50'-60' subway car is 70,000 lbs. and the average weight of a 75' subway car is 85,000 lbs.

The horsepower rating of a subway traction motor is 115 horsepower. Each car has four traction motors.
